Racing

David Ord

Philip Makin has made a promising start to his training career and can strike at Carlisle on Saturday with Debawtry in the Gretna Gateway Dream Handicap.

The daughter of Camacho has had three starts for her new yard and shaped very well at Thrsk last time, travelling strongly and picking up nicely to finish third behind Gamesome racing on the unflavoured side of the track.

She has pace drawn around here which will help and the Carlisle hill will aid her bid to reel in the early leaders and from only a pound above her last mark, a big run must be on the cards.

Ben Linfoot

Zhui Feng, Mojito, Via Serendipity, Qaroun and Salute The Soldier all like to be prominent, so a strong gallop looks likely and that scenario on Good to Firm ground is ideal for Escobar who is beginning to look well treated now.

He's on an 11-race losing streak, but the last time he got his head in front was off a good gallop on conditions like these off a mark of 95 – and he won easily by two lengths at Haydock before running under a penalty in last year's Hunt Cup.

This is the first time he has run off a mark in the 90s since then and off 98 he’s dangerous if everything falls his way.

Crucially, he likes Sandown, too. A neck second here in the 2017 Heron Stakes when with Hugo Palmer, he would’ve gone one better than that in this race last year off a mark of 102 if he hadn’t bumped into the well-punted and well-treated Tigre Du Terre.

Off a 4lb lower mark he’s of interest this time around at big odds, as he shaped better than the bare result at York last time out and Andrea Atzeni takes over in the saddle as well.

Simon Holt

First Eleven has gone up 5lb for winning at York in May, he may well prove classy enough to defy top weight and justify likely favouritism in the bet365 Old Newton Cup.

First Eleven was almost certainly an unlucky loser at last year's Royal meeting but made amends on a return to Ascot in September and this superbly-bred son of Frankel (a half brother to Kingman) has a great attitude and looks open to further improvement.

Robert Havlin's mount is not so well drawn on the outside but a fast gallop looks likely.

Matt Brocklebank

A three-year-old handicap over a mile and three-quarters and perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised to see Mark Johnston responsible for four of the seven runners.

Despite this it could be Richard Fahey’s Arctic Fox who goes off favourite following the filly’s three straight wins over slightly shorter distances at Newmarket and York (x2).

She’s a fascinating horse but Johnston – who won the race 12 months ago with subsequent Chester Cup winner Making Miracles – clearly has a stranglehold on matters and it’s last month’s course winner Mind The Crack who looks the one to be on under Haydock specialist Richard Kingscote.

Mind The Crack has gone up 6lb for his mile and a half success at this venue but could be called the winner a long way from home and still looks to have significant upside from his revised rating of 89.

Having won on good to firm in a Lingfield maiden on his seasonal debut, the son of Jukebox Jury doesn’t have much to prove ground-wise and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him progress past stablemate Sir Ron Priestley who was obviously well fancied at Royal Ascot but came up well short on ground he may not have appreciated.

Oli Bell

This horse is improving all the time for William Haggas and landed the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar last time. More is needed here but we haven't seen the best of him yet and he can defy his new mark stepping up to this trip for the first time.

Mark Johnston has a good record in the race so Aquarium and Charles Kingsley are respected but the main threat is Sky Bet Jorvik Stakes winner First Eleven. The form of his York race is working out very well.

Wimbledon

Scott Ferguson

Italian 17th seed Matteo Berrettini has passed through the opening rounds without much fuss, defeating Aljaz Bedene in four sets and Marcos Baghdatis in three. His serve dictated the match each time, winning over 80% of first serve points and the majority of them on the second ball, much as you’d expect for a player standing 6’5”.

At the other end this time will be the nuggety Argentinian Diego Sebastian Schwartzman. Not blessed with cloud-touching height, his success is based around a superb return game, ranked only behind Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Fabio Fognini on that metric. To be able to blunt the power of his opponent gives him a big advantage over Berrettini’s victims so far. Based on the likelihood of playing on a show court, which has been reported as slower than those outside, this brings the players a lot closer together than the market indicates.

All aboard Schwartzman here, that price is simply too high.

Tom Carnduff - Women's World Cup Final

The USA come into this one as odds-on favourites and it's little surprise given the way they have performed across the course of the tournament.

Not only has the team excelled, but so too has star forward Alex Morgan who is rivalling England's Ellen White for the top goalscorer accolade.

Morgan has six to her name and struck the winner in their semi-final success over the Lionesses. Her form throughout this World Cup has been excellent and you'd expect at least one goal on the big stage.

A general price of 23/20 is available on a goal within 90 minutes which looks excellent value in the circumstances.
