Newmarket review: Red Amazing for Dettori

A review of Saturday's meeting on Newmarket's July Course as Amazing Red bolted up for Ed Dunlop and a son of Kingman impressed on debut for John Gosden.

Ed Dunlop has yet to win the Northumberland Plate but Amazing Red could change all that following a taking success in the John Sunley Memorial Handicap at Newmarket.

After suffering trouble in running last time out, Frankie Dettori's mount put matters right when staying on impressively in the one-mile-six-furlong contest to claim a second win of the campaign, posting a three-and-a-half length success.

The Newmarket handler said of the 8/1 winner: "There was an argument to say he was an unlucky loser last time, so it is great it has gone well today and that he has won a decent race.

"He is Red Cadeaux's half-brother and is an improving horse. Frankie said I could have won him! I am thrilled for Ronnie (Arculli, owner) that he has got something on the up.

"He is probably going to go up to 100. He is a lightly-raced horse and he does stay well.

"He is in the Northumberland Plate and we will see about that."

There was drama early in the race when favourite Addicted To You unseated Harry Bentley, who was later stood down after being taken to the medical room for further assessment, although he was not thought to have suffered serious injury.

John Gosden looks to have unearthed another smart prospect in the shape of Calyx, who gave Kingman his first winner as a sire when landing the AFT Fluorotec EBF Novice Stakes at Newmarket.

Settled just off the early pace in the six-furlong event, the 5/2 favourite picked up well when sent on by Robert Havlin to quickly open up a healthy advantage, crossing the line five lengths clear of previous winner Octave.

Gosden said: "He is Kingman's first winner. His father broke his maiden here, although it was not in this race, it was in July. Ryan Moore rode him over seven and he won by five or six lengths."

He added of Calyx: "He has always shown up well at home and he will have no trouble with seven furlongs when the time comes.

"He showed good speed and travelled well. He was a bit green, but he picked up well and Rab Havlin got a good feel from him.

"He has shown some character at home, mostly the round the gates. We will see how the horse is over the next few days before thinking about those things (Royal Ascot)."

Gunmetal continued his revival to set up a possible tilt at the Wokingham at Royal Ascot when digging deep to land the Margaret Giffen Memorial Handicap.

The gelding built on his victory at Thirsk to make it two from two since joining David Barron, rallying well under Ben Curtis to deny favourite Eastern Impact by half a length.

Curtis said of the 9/2 winner: "He is very straightforward to ride and has improved from his last run to this run. The quicker the ground, the better for him.

"He will pick up a penalty for that and if he gets in the Wokingham I am sure the owners will have a look."

Maksab (10/1) ended a recent spell in the doldrums when surviving a stewards' inquiry to run out the winner of the Animal Health Trust Handicap.

Having been comfortably held in his previous two starts, the Mick Channon-trained three-year-old pulled out just enough to get the better of Yafta by a head, scoring for the first time since landing a course and distance handicap last August.

Winning rider David Egan said: "He was very game in putting his head down. Once I got my head in front I always knew I was doing enough in the last 50 yards.

"I wanted to make the most of my light weight so I kicked early and he did it well."

Best of the rest

Aim Of Artemis paid back a small slice of the one million guineas paid by Godolphin after completing a double for Havlin and the middle leg of a treble for Gosden in the Porsche Centre Cambridge "Confined" Fillies' Novice Stakes.

Sold as part of the Ballymacoll Stud dispersal, the 11/10 chance put her previous experience to good use in the seven-furlong affair to defeat debutant Choco Box by a length.

Gosden said: "She had a tough winter and was a little bit roughed off from the sale and she took a long time to come back.

"Seven furlongs is a little bit inadequate, but she surprised Rab how much natural speed she had. We will step her up to a mile now and in the end she will get a mile and a quarter."

Rococo (11/4) appeared to benefit from the step up to a mile and a half when running riot over her rivals to complete Gosden's haul and bring about a brace for Frankie Dettori with a stylish success in the John Holmes Handicap.

Dettori, who won the Sunley Handicap aboard Amazing Red for Ed Dunlop, said: "Going up in trip has definitely made a difference and she has won well today. She is improving, but she is not there yet."

After tasting defeat with his first five runners on the card, trainer Mark Johnston finally got on the scoresheet when Aclimatise (7/2) took a step up to a mile and a quarter in his stride in the AHT Charity Lottery Handicap.

Assistant trainer Charlie Johnston said: "He has got good form at a mile, but on his run at Leicester he looked like he was crying out for this trip, as he was lost at half way then stayed on very strongly.

"He has got a couple of entries on Wednesday and Thursday so he could be out again next week."
