Brian Hughes 5/4 for title after Carlisle four-timer

Brian Hughes has been cut to 5/4 by Sky Bet to win the jockeys' title after a four-timer at Carlisle on Sunday.

The northern-based star is now level with current champion Richard Johnson on 95 winners in the standings after partnering Big Bad Bear (1/4), Taxmeifyoucan (9/4), Kitty Hall (11/8) and Mackenberg (9/4) to victory at the Cumbrian track.

Hughes was originally a 16/1 chance with the Leeds-based firm in the summer and is now the shortest-price he's been at any stage. Johnson is 4/6 favourite.

Head of Sports PR Michael Shinners said: "Brian continues to dominate the northern scene and has great momentum right now. It could be a thrilling battle between the two if they can stay injury free between now and the end of the season."

Two of Hughes' winners were for Nicky Richards - Big Bad Bear in the Racing TV Novices' Hurdle and Kitty Hall in the Blackwell Mares' Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race.

After Big Bad Bear's victory, Richards told Racing TV: "It was nice and smooth, and he jumped pretty good. Brian said over the last two hurdles the sun was just glaring at them and he didn't go and jump the last two good, but he won nicely.

"The second horse (Multellie) of Tim's (Easterby) seems to like it here, so it might not be a bad performance.

"In the short term, we wouldn't want to be running him on that ground too often. Better ground will suit him, he might have one more run in the next six weeks or so and the nice ground might be around the corner by then. He's not the biggest, but he's a grand little jumper and I've no doubt he'll jump a fence."

The Greystoke trainer's other two winners were Chapel Stile (11-4) in the Like Racing TV On Facebook Chase and Teddy Tee (4-1) in the Join Racing TV Now Handicap Chase, both ridden by Ryan Day.

Richards is also looking forward to stepping Ribble Valley up in class in the Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices' Hurdle, registered as the Kennel Gate.

The six-year-old has been impressing in winning both his starts over the smaller obstacles, at Hexham and Wetherby.

"He's done nothing wrong and deserves to step up in class and get a bit more education," he said.
