Review of the action from Newbury on Friday including wins for Eirene and Purser

Eirene was a decisive winner of the Bathwick Tyres St Hugh's Stakes.

Following a promising debut effort at Yarmouth, Dean Ivory's filly opened her account at the second time of asking at Doncaster before finding one too good in a novice event at Nottingham.

The daughter of Declaration Of War was a 10/1 shot stepped up to Listed class and Robert Winston settled her at the rear of the group that raced on the far side of the track.

Eirene was moved towards the centre to throw down her challenge inside the final two furlongs and she responded well to pressure to prevail by a length and three-quarters.

Johnny Murtagh's Irish challenger Sankari Royale was second ahead of Mrs Gallagher in third.

Winston said: "She probably bumped into a decent sort at Nottingham (Sands Of Mali) and it was very heavy that day over six furlongs. She just got outstayed on that ground and the drop back to five on soft ground has helped her today.

"She has always been very highly thought of. Today was obviously a chance to prove herself in Listed company. I think the long-term goal for her could be the Cheveley Park (needs to be supplemented). She will get six furlongs when it's not so soft.

"Dean is not too well as he has a stomach bug, but he will be here on Saturday The horses are in great form and the team are working hard at home. She is one of his best two-year-olds. She was very highly thought of early in the season and she is starting to prove that now."

Ryan Moore timed his fractions to perfection after getting Purser up on the line in the opening division of the Don Deadman Memorial EBF Maiden Stakes at Newbury.

Having moved well throughout the seven-furlong prize, the John Gosden-trained son of Mizzen Mast picked up well in the closing stages to make a winning racecourse debut. Moving off in pursuit of favourite Merlin Magic inside the final furlong, the 2/1 chance collared his main market rival in the dying strides to get up and claim victory by a head.

Thady Gosden, son and pupil assistant of the winning trainer, said: "He had a fantastic ride under hands and heels from Ryan Moore. It was the perfect example of how to ride a two-year-old.

"I think seven furlongs will be his trip at the moment. It was a little bit too soft for him and he will probably like good or better ground. He was pleasing us at home and it is great for him to come out and win first time. I imagine the plan will be to bring him out again."

Qaroun built on a solid debut when putting his previous experience to good use in the second division of the maiden. After finding one too good first time out at Doncaster, the son of Dark Angel showed he had progressed for that run with a stylish success.

Although a touch free early on, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained 11/8 favourite picked up well in the hands of Frankie Dettori to cross the line with a length in hand over He's Amazing.

Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Al Shaqab Racing, said: "Frankie likes him and he is a work in progress. He will probably only have one more run this year. We will not go too ambitious and we will probably look for a conditions race or something like that. Frankie said you don't want to be going to the well too much this year.

"I think that ground was soft enough for him. I loved his attitude - he has got a very good attitude."

Rowan Scott made his first trip to the track a winning one after steering Set In Stone to a facile success in the Christopher Smith Associates Handicap.

The 5lb claimer had a willing partner in the Pat Shanahan-trained three-year-old, who once again showed her appreciation for racing on a soft surface. Bursting clear of her rivals around a furlong out in the mile prize, the 9/1 shot maintained her gallop all the way to the line to run out an eased-down two-and-a-quarter-length winner.

Scott said: "Newbury is a lovely track to ride at and I would love to have more winners here. She loved the ground and is so honest. Once I pulled out and gave her a tap, she quickly went away."

Owner Jimmy Long added: "The ground has helped her a lot and we will see what the handicapper does. We might wait for soft ground and go for a Listed race over seven furlongs or a mile, or we might just put her away and breed from her next year."

Great Sound gifted part owners Chris Clark and Pam Rutherford an early wedding present when returning to winning ways in the Berry Bros & Rudd Cellar Plan Handicap. The pair, who are part of the Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing Limited syndicate, watched on with delight as the Gosden-trained three-year-old, cast his rivals aside in the extended one-mile-five-furlong event.

Taking closer order entering the home straight, the 6/4 favourite had plenty up his sleeve to bounce back from his defeat at Salisbury last time when holding Comrade Conrad at bay by half a length.

Harry Herbert, racing manager to the owners, said: "(Winning rider) Frankie Dettori said that he is very relaxed and just does the bare minimum. He is very progressive and he stays really well. He is a horse that has done very little wrong. He was such a baby last year and was immature both mentally and physically.

"John Gosden said to be patient with him as he knows the family like the back of his hand and it is paying off now. It is a perfect wedding present for Pam Rutherford and Chris Clark, who are both part of the syndicate and are due to get married next Saturday."
