Brighton review: Pranceabootthetoon puts smile back on face of John Ryan

John Ryan may have been out of luck at Royal Ascot last week but Pranceabootthetoon helped put a smile back on his face after making a winning debut.

Despite being the only newcomer in the Trailwalker 100km Challenge 29-30 July Novice Auction Stakes, the son of Sir Prancealot quickened away from from his rivals smartly late on in the six-furlong event.

Ryan said of his 11/1 winner: "He is a typical breeze-up horse. He took a while to settle, but he is coming on now and given his size it was time to get on with him.

"When Dan (Muscutt) rode him the other day in a piece of work on the Limekilns he said he was well enough balanced to come to somewhere like Brighton. We came here quietly confident as he had been working with other horses that had been working well."

On his Ascot runners Grey Britain and Lady Freyja, he added: "They are both nice horses and they ran very well, but the draws didn't help either of them, it was simple as that. We are not disappointed with them."

Daniel Kubler ended a frustrating run of form after Av A Word maintained his unbeaten record at the Sussex track in the Labyrinth Challenge 18 August Handicap.

Without a winner since saddling a double at Chelmsford last month, the Lambourn handler saw his fortunes change as the 2/1 favourite made it two from two at the course.

Kubler said: "He probably wants a touch further and a much stronger gallop. Last time he won here they went a stronger gallop. There was no obvious pace so we had to be handy, but this fellow only just does enough."

He added: "We have started to get going now as we were a little bit quiet at the beginning of the year, but we have got some quite nice two-year-olds.

"We had a double at Chelmsford and I thought we would kick on, but we have had a few seconds so it was great to see him get his head in front."

Expectant mum Ginzan (7/2) gained the 11th victory of her career when scoring for the seventh season in succession after landing the Love Fairs Antiques 27 Aug Handicap.

Although out of luck in her first two starts this term, the nine-year-old got her head in front for the first time since last September in the extended five-and-a-half-furlong affair when having enough in hand to hold off Mr Pocket by a neck.

Winning trainer Malcolm Saunders said: "She is in foal and as she is nine we decided to do it now rather than wait until the end of the season. I think it is about mid-August she is due and we are only in June so we have a bit of time yet.

"We've had her since a yearling and she has turned out to be brilliant. She wins every year. We try and come here when we can. She is a nice horse, easy to train and gives 100 per cent."

Joshua Bryan moved to within two winners of having his claim reduced from 7lb to 5lb after galvanising the Alan Bailey-trained Strictly Carter (7/2) to glory in the Marc Almond And The South 8 Sept Handicap.

Bryan said: "He travelled well throughout the race. He has only got one run so I tried to hold on to him. Ideally he would prefer quicker ground, but he got the job done.

"I need two more to get down to five and I am at Salisbury and Bath on Wednesday. Hopefully I can do it then."

The John Best-trained Luxford (5/1) came good at the 10th time of asking when taking The Human League 8 Sept Handicap by two and a half lengths, while Jumping Jack (5/2) from the yard of Richard Hughes opened his account on turf with a length success in the toteplacepot At totesport.com Handicap.

Poppy Bridgwater teamed up with her dad, and trainer David, to take the concluding Hacienda Classical 9 Sept Amateur Riders' Handicap with Tempuran (6/1).
