2.50 Wincanton

A case can be made for (what was) the outsider of the five, FLAGRANT DELITIEP here. He’s not been in the same form as last year this time around, and he cut out a bit quickly for comfort at Chepstow last time to be confident about him, but he reappears quickly enough after that disappointing effort to think that whatever was ailing him, it was hopefully a one-off.

We are of the opinion he’s a better horse going right-handed and today’s test should suit him, so from a 6lb lower mark than when narrowly beaten over C&D last February, he has an excellent chance if bouncing back to anywhere near his best form.

3.20 Wincanton

If it’s Wincanton and good ground then FINDUSATGORCOMBE is always going to make the shortlist. He ran a bit better than his finishing position suggested at Hereford last time, making most until weakening two out (went off 28/1 but traded 3/1 in the run), possibly going a bit too quick for his own good.

On good ground here his record in handicap chases reads 2124, and with an easy lead looking the most likely scenario, he’s going to be hard to kick out the frame if he runs his race.

3.10 Catterick

Meanwhile, oop North, there’s this interesting looking novices handicap chase where, like a bran tub, you need to start at the bottom to find the good stuff.

Right at the bottom is Big Bad Buzz, the latest in a line of Ryan Potter horses to be well backed after showing little in his previous starts (250/1, 80/1, then 9/2 fav). He made his ground up easily enough before finding little at the finish, and that has to be a concern, given he’s had wind surgery previously. Anyway, the cat’s out the bag now, and the bookies have already taken precautions not to get caught out again.

Just above Big Bad Buzz in the handicap is Serious Mood, a winning pointer who has got himself handicapped here with three runs in novice hurdles. He’s clearly had his issues, as a long absence before thee runs this year would indicate, but this has the whiff of a plan about it and a mark of just 73 (3lb out of the handicap here) is surely there to be taken advantage of.

4.10 Catterick

The card closes with this handicap hurdle, where I WILL FOLLOW HER caught the eye with the hood back on. She showed plenty of ability on her hurdling debut at Chepstow last last March, beating all bar the runaway odds-on winner Galice Macalo, and after a couple more runs to get her mark, was upped to 3m at Market Rasen, and had her hood removed.

She pulled hard and simply didn’t get home on that occasion, but still showed enough to think there’s a race or two in her, and this drop back to two miles, together with the reapplication the headgear, gives her a more suitable opportunity. There’s some pace on too, with Alright Marlene and Sawpit Sienna likely to make it a true-run race, which ought to help her settle better, and we expect an improved effort today.

We wouldn't want to back her any shorter than she is this morning, but given this is a race with extra places there's plenty of overround at present, and we can see her drifting back a bit as racetime approaches.
