Ludlow review: 1/20 favourite Tree Of Liberty beaten into second

A round-up of the action from Ludlow on Thursday as 1/20 favourite Tree Of Liberty was beaten into second.

Cap'n produced one of the biggest shocks in jumps racing history when overturning 1/20 shot Tree Of Liberty in a three-horse affair for the Alfa Aggregate Products Novices' Chase at Ludlow.

The seven-year-old, trained by Claire Dyson and ridden by Brendan Powell, came home two and a half lengths to the good over the Kerry Lee-trained hot-pot.

Tree Of Liberty attempted to make all the running in the two-mile heat but was challenged by Cap'n and Over To Midnight, who was the 25/1 outsider of the trio, when the latter took a crashing fall at the second-last fence.

Cap'n took control to open his account as Tree Of Liberty had nothing left to give in the closing stages.

Tree Of Liberty was found by the Ludlow chief veterinary officer to have bled from the nose.

Cap'n had been highly tried on the Flat and was a tailed-off last in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup last October.

He was then set some stiff tasks over jumps, most notably in Sandown's Contenders Hurdle against Buveur D'Air and in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton, before making his chasing debut at Ludlow.

Dyson told Racing UK: "The owner is a very sporting lady. She's got her ideas. She gives me a plan and I try to accommodate her. We've had some great days out and even against Buveur D'Air, he didn't embarrass himself.

"We just keep coming and having a nice day out. It's so much easier to run in two-, three- or four-runner novice chases and give them an education rather than these novice handicaps.

"Second prize-money would have great, third we'd have been happy with. Brendan has given him a lovely ride and they've had a bit of a race from two out."

The Worcestershire handler added: "I thought he'd run a nice race. He had to learn to be a race horse in the Kingwell and then the owner wanted him to go novice chasing and teach him to jump.

"He does travel like a nice horse and if he jumps, which he has, we should be able to be competitive.

"Don't be surprised if he comes up somewhere in a big meeting. He's run in three hurdle races and a novice chase and has picked up about 11 or 12 grand - I think he's only beaten two horses!
