York Ebor blog | Replay day two of York Ebor meeting blog, starring Enable

Enable starred on day two of the Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival at York - replay Ben Linfoot's track side blog from the Knavesmire.

All times BST

1710: We'll wrap up for the day now with the last race over and done with and tomorrow's Value Bet now published here. Come on sizzling, do it for the good guys (and me).

It was a stroll in the park for Enable in the Yorkshire Oaks today, and, if seeing the hot Arc favourite wasn't enough for you we somehow crank the dial up another notch tomorrow as Lady Aurelia faces Battaash in a battle to see the fastest horse on four legs.

I'll be back again tomorrow, relatively bright and early, so hopefully you can join me then. Thanks for following the coverage with us, have a very pleasant evening.

1705: Lincoln Rocks wins the finale here at York and it's heartbreak for our Pick 7 player with Breakable only second. It is the toughest of games.

1635: Just the one race to go today and we have one Pick 7 player cheering on Breakable for the £50,000 bounty.

1623: Mum and dad won't be pleased as Mori disappoints, but a proud Teofilo will be nodding in approval as his daughter Fleur Forsyte lands the British EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes in style under Daniel Muscatt.

James Fanshawe's Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes entry fights off the attentions of Jedd O'Keefe's More Mischief to land the spoils.

1615: Ever so slight delay to the Galtres Stakes as we wait for Chepstow. Mori, by Frankel out of Midday, is your odds-on favourite.

1553: John Gosden says: "She's done it beautifully and it proves she can do it from the front.

"She'll go to the Arc. At a mile and a half, she's the best filly I've ever trained. She's a very exceptional filly."

Frankie Dettori confirms it was all very routine, saying: "She's competitive, she likes to have a fight but unfortunately today there was no fight.

"She'll go there [Chantilly for the Arc] with a favourite's chance with the weight allowance."

1550: A warm applause from the York crowd as they see another real good 'un in the Prince Khalid Abdullah silks. I'm not sure she did anything there to warrant being cut to even-money from 5/4 for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe but there you go. A little trim for the sake of it.

Here she is getting snapped by the snappers after parading in front of the stands...

What a picture: Enable

1539: It was all very easy for Enable who stretches clear under Dettori without fuss. It was nothing more than a fancy piece of work really with her jockey just keeping the daughter of Nathaniel up to her work to ensure she gets the job done from stablemate Coronet who runs on well for second. All roads lead to Paris now... it will take a very good one to beat her.

Enable first...
Enable first...

1536: And she's off... Dettori not messing about as he decides to make all on the hot favourite.

1530: Frankie Dettori is on board Enable as she goes to post. There's not a lot of frantic betting activity happening in front of me, more an expectant crowd hoping to cheer home a champion, just as they did Frankel in the same colours five years ago. She's not quite as short as he was - she's 1/4 now - but anything other than an Enable win here would be a big shock. She looks magnificent going down.

1513: Flaming Spear was not for catching in the final furlong...

1509: It's been a stop-start career for Flaming Spear ever since he made a deep impression at this very track on debut back in the summer of 2014. But he's very much in 'start' mode again now after landing the Clipper Logistics under Robert Winston for Kevin Ryan who does get his York winner today following on from some near misses.

He tracked the pace set by Northgate Lad and streaked clear in the final furlong, winning what looked like being a competitive handicap by nearly a couple of lengths from Qassem. He's done it easily and reversed Ascot form with Firmament who has run a blinder off a big weight, a fully 13lb higher than when he won this race last season.

As for my selections, Bravery ran okay even if he did get the run of the race and One Word More was very disappointing. Things probably didn't go to plan for him as very little got into things from off the pace and he was anchored stone last, but still, better was expected. We go again tomorrow...

1455: They're going down to post for the Clipper Logistics. I bet Ronald R would've been in Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's day-saving trifecta and he's been very well backed on course. He's your 6/1 clear favourite for Michael Bell and Ryan Moore.

1443: Sky Bet go 16/1 first show for the 1000 Guineas next year after that and she was an impressive winner. She's likely to go for the Cheveley Park next.

1432: It's the supplemented Threading that wins the Sky Bet Lowther and trainer Mark Johnston enjoyed that one as he roared her home from the stands. Wife Deirdre explains to some nearby racegoers that they were roars of were relief having supplemented her but I don't think Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum would've been desperately trying to solve the Clipper Logistics trifecta to win back the fee had she failed to recoup the loot. She's done it very nicely, too, pulling almost two lengths clear of Madeline.

1419: A timely email from Kenneth Wiener ahead of Happy Like A Fool's appearance in the upcoming Sky Bet Lowther Stakes. He says: "Hello from Toronto Ben. Loved the ITV racing presenter competition! There is tremendous interest in North America following Wesley Ward’s runners. Thanks to Mr. Ward for being the first to seriously try racing in the U.K. from a base in North America. Of course European horses have come this way for years. I remember seeing the great All Along win the Rothmans International in Toronto in 1983. The internalization of racing with the help of modern broadcast technology is truly a wonderful thing."

Thanks KW. I love the vision of Ward to come and have a go at our races it would be great to see more cross the Atlantic and follow his lead. The presence of the North American horses adds more flavour to the meeting and the potential spectacle of Lady Aurelia versus our very own Battaash tomorrow really is a mouthwatering thought.

As for Happy Like A Fool, I just wonder, will the ground be quick enough for her? We'll find out shortly...

1412: David says: "Just laughing at Johnny Murtagh saying there is no track bias. Hey Jonesy has beaten everything on his side by a distance yet 9 out the first 10 places drawn on the other side? I think time will tell an inordinately superior horse lost. Yes, Iam speaking through my great morning price pocket."

Thanks for that David, I have to agree with you in some respects. The best horse probably came third there and it looks like Kevin Ryan has a nice one to go to war with. This bias thing, though, it does seem to change race-by-race never mind day-by-day. Another one of Ryan's, Queen's Sargent, was a head second from stall 19 in the nursery yesterday. Was he beaten by the draw? I'm not sure.

1410: Mark Craven asks another question I think I can answer. I do like these. He says: "Good afternoon Ben, looking forward to a great days racing again, I managed to back Wells Farhh Go yesterday so here's hoping for today, I was just wondering how the reserves system worked for the Ebor and wanted to know the final cut off time that the reserves may be called upon?"

Well Mark, the cut off point is 1pm the day before the race. So, any non-runners alerted to the BHA by 1pm Friday will be replaced by a reserve. Then after 1pm, no replacements.

1402: Tangled wins the Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes, the opening race on day two here at York, for Richard Hannon, just getting the better of Great Prospector after Hey Jonesy had led for much of the way on the stands' side.

It was the other side of the track that dominated the finish, though, stalls three and four filling the first two places with Alba Power, drawn in five, fourth after doing plenty of racing on his own on the far-side rail.

1355: My computer inexplicably just restarted halfway through what was the best update of the day. Oh well, they're almost in for the first...

1344: Steve says: "Hi Ben, Feeling nervous about Enable, hope she's not another York surprise. Does anybody know the origin of the name Hey Jonesy? Is it a line from the film Sunset Boulevard?"

I don't get that feeling with Enable, Steve. But I have had that feeling before, I know the one you mean. As for your Hey Jonesy question, I'll have to open it up to the blog readers as I have no idea.

I do know he's generally 3/1 here at York, though, looking at the boards and it looks like Alba Power has opened up at around the 7/1 mark...

1336: Ah, that's better was flagging momentarily after skipping breakfast but a bit of beef and a bit of cheesecake has perked me right up. It's been spitting on and off but nothing like yesterday's rain dramas and the crowds have piled in here at York on day two.

Here's one snap:

Plenty of hats
Plenty of hats

1300: Another cracking card tomorrow. I think (well, hope) I've got one. The crowds are filling up ahead of today's action, so time to grab a bite to eat before it all kicks off. Keep sending in your emails in to the address at the top as we edge towards the start of Darley Yorkshire Oaks day here at York.

1235: Plenty of horses attracting the cash here at York today. It's no surprise to see Hey Jonesy smashed up in the first and he's 100/30 from 11/2 (I couldn't back him at his new price, mind you), while Ken Condon's Mamba Noire has been nibbled at each-way and is into 20s.

Lots have been backed in the Clipper Logistics Handicap at 3.00, where Oh This Is Us is the most significant non runner. Chelsea Lad is the 7/1 favourite with Ronald R, Victory Bond, El Vip and One Word More all being supported into single figures.

And in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks everything bar Enable is friendless. The star attraction is into 1/4 from 30/100 in many places. There will be some long faces here at York today if she's beaten, none longer than chairman Lord Grimthorpe one suspects.

"It's no easy task," he insisted at the York preview evening here on Tuesday night, with his York hat on and his Khalid Abdullah racing manager hat on. We shall see...

1205: Who is the smartest ITV Racing presenter? Oli Bell or Ed Chamberlin? I know who my money's on...

Ed Chamberlin & Oli Bell York quiz

1155: Fergus joins us and he says: "Morning Ben, score draw with bookies yesterday having bailed out on Churchill when rain arrived! Long time ago Luca Cumani used to farm the Galtres Stakes & Aljezeera looks the part having had nice rest. Any drying of ground big plus. El VIP for Cumani double?"

Thanks Fergus, I agonised over El Vip myself as he's the sort of horse Cumani excels with isn't he, and I think you can put a line through his Royal Ascot run given how that panned out.

As for Aljezeera I've not done the race in depth by any means, but she's one of those horses that looks far too short on what she's actually achieved but then, she's so lightly raced, and it wouldn't surprise in the slightest if she improved massively, so much so you begin to think the price is a good one.

Confused? So am I. I guess what I'm saying is I wouldn't put you off the each-way double.

1141: A short, sharp, shower is followed by sunshine as the draw for the Ebor is made. Tom Stanley is doing a sterling job, but why not just use the BHA random-draw-computer for this one? At least it wasn't made in China at 0437 am...

1140: Thanks for your early correspondence, here are today's tips from...

JP in Paris: Guzman/Angel Of The South, Blair House/GK Chesterton, Coronet (without Enable) Shearling, Caridade/Perfect Madge.

Mark Erler: Great Prospector, Actress, One Word More, Mori, Lincoln Rocks.

Paul 'The Rock' Romain: Hey Jonesy/Alba Power/Marnie James, Actress/Mamba Noire, Ronald R (and several others), Nezwaah, AlJezeera/Shearling, Cristal Fizz.

Good luck gentleman. The Rock was in great form yesterday with Ulysses, Wells Farhh Go and Desert Law among his selections so maybe he's the man to follow. You can't have my job yet though!

1125: Sorry, it's distracting isn't it looking at Saturday's decs when we've Thursday and Friday to go yet? Still, it is the Ebor. Early signs are a shortlist of seven, but there's plenty of time to whittle that down.

1110: The final field for the Ebor... the draw is being made here at York this morning.

The final Ebor field
The final Ebor field

1055: Yesterday's impressive winner Magic Circle has snuck into the Ebor on Saturday under his 4lb penalty. The Makfi gelding is two from two at York after yesterday's win and he has something in hand this weekend judging by the victory (click here to watch free video replay).

I was too concerned about Ralph Beckett's stable form to back Magic Circle yesterday, as the trainer had just the one win in August to his name prior to the York success. But there's clearly nothing wrong with Magic Circle, and if he can back up within four days he could go very close on Saturday.

Winning the Ebor after scoring over two miles just four days beforehand is a tough ask, but in the October of 2015 Magic Circle did win twice in a week so he does have previous for this sort of thing, albeit at a much lower level.

1030: Good morning everyone and welcome to our York blog for day two of the Ebor meeting. The rain didn't dampen anything here apart from the ground yesterday as Ulysses and Cracksman delivered in style and the conditions are drying today ahead of another wonderful card.

The going is now Good to Soft, Good in places and we're forecast a dry day, a high of 19 degrees and a light breeze. It's all very pleasant and we're set fair ahead of the star attraction, the Investec Oaks, Irish Oaks and King George winner Enable, a brilliant filly and current 5/4 favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Such massive prices are nowhere to be seen today, however. She's a best price of 30/100 and, though York has hosted its fair share of upsets down the years, including in this race, it would be a pretty seismic shock if we don't see a Frankie Dettori flying dismount from the Nathaniel filly at around 3.45pm.

I'm Ben Linfoot, your personal blogger on the Knavesmire for days one, two and three. Please send me your emails throughout the day to the address at the top and we shall enjoy another cracking afternoon's sport together.
