January 3 fixture at Towcester cancelled

The British Horseracing Authority has announced the cancellation of Towcester's fixture on January 3.

The future of the racecourse was left up in the air during the summer after it was revealed the company which owned the track was taking steps to place the business into administration.

Last month it was confirmed by administrators that the racecourse's assets - which include racing fixtures, the stands and the greyhound track that has been the home of the Greyhound Derby for the last two years - had been sold to Milton Keynes-registered company, Fermor Land LLP, which brought to an end the day-to-day running of the Northamptonshire track by Lord Hesketh.

The future of the venue is expected to become clearer in the new year.

Confirming the cancellation of the early January fixture, a BHA statement read: "The background to this cancellation is that this fixture was leased from the BHA on a one year basis and, within the terms of the lease, in circumstances where it is not possible for the racecourse to stage the fixture, it is handed back to the BHA to be re-offered to alternative racecourses.

"Having gone through the process of re-offering the fixture, there were no applications.

"This is the only fixture of this type that was due to be staged at Towcester in 2019 and the BHA will continue to work with Towcester's owners regarding the racecourse's upcoming fixtures and the longer-term status of the course."
