Goldream 'melted' in Ascot heat, believes trainer Cowell

Robert Cowell believes Goldream failed to handle the hot weather when disappointing in Tuesday's King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The eight-year-old won the five-furlong heat back in 2015 and connections were hoping for a bold show back in Berkshire after Goldream finished a narrow second in the Temple Stakes on his prep run.

However, Goldream found little when asked in the race and eventually finished an eight-and-a-half-length 10th behind Lady Aurelia, with Cowell pointing to temperatures above 30 degrees as his charge's likely undoing.

He said: "It was a very hot day, he's a black horse and I think he just melted in the heat.

"There was nothing outwardly wrong with him, I just think the heat got to him.

"He should have had a turn of foot off that kind of pace and even though he wouldn't have got anywhere near Lady Aurelia, he should have been in the shake-up with the others.

"We might look at the Coral Charge (at Sandown) for him and there are all those usual sprints as options."

Cowell also suffered disappointment on Wednesday as Chica La Habana, who won the Hilary Needler at Beverley on her racecourse bow, finished down the field in the Queen Mary Stakes.

He added: "There were only 10 days between Beverley and Ascot this year, so we didn't really get too much of a chance to evaluate her in between as we don't work our horses quite as often as some other yards.

"The ground was good to soft when she won at Beverley and it was a lot faster at Ascot.

"It's not the end of the world, she's won a Hilary Needler already and we'll look for something smaller with her."
