Ribchester was green first time out in a Doncaster maiden and then got hampered soon after the start when pitched into the Group 2 Gimcrack at York on his second outing. He made it third time lucky in the Mill Reef at Newbury, a course at which he finished with a perfect 2-2 track record.
The first of two Royal Ascot wins for the son of Iffraaj and although 'only' a Group 3, the Jersey Stakes was his real breakthrough moment on the big stage. The large field helped him travel powerfully and he quickened really smartly a furlong and a half out to go on to score with loads in hand under William Buick.
Group 1 glory was achieved in France in 2016 but he had to wait until the following spring for his first top-class score on home soil, which came in the Lockinge. Dropping slightly in trip having contested the Dubai Turf (1m1f) earlier in the year, he made in what is arguably his career best performance in pure form terms.
The proper crowning glory moment, however, came at Royal Ascot as he really had to knuckle down to land skinny odds in the Queen Anne. It wasn't particularly pretty late on but he showed grit to match his undoubted class, while he went on to add more Group 1 honours to his glittering CV in the 2017 Prix du Moulin at Chantilly.
