Top trainer William Haggas fields Mujtaba and Protagonist, two potential pattern horses, in a bid to win his first bet365 Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket on Saturday, but the latter may have been fortunate to beat DUAL IDENTITY last time.

In a 10-furlong, 15-runner handicap at Sandown, Protagonist was always in a good position before going on over two furlongs out whereas Dual Identity turned for home with the whole field in front of him.

Andrea Atzeni soon pulled his mount for a run down the outside and the four-year-old's finishing effort was as good as anything I have seen all season; he was flying home in the final furlong and would certainly have won in another few strides.

That performance confirmed that Dual Identity is on the up as his previous Sandown defeat of Tregony has been well boosted with the runner-up completing a hat-trick of victories subsequently.

The unique nature of the Cambridgeshire, which has sometimes been described as a nine-furlong sprint, can suit a horse who stays a bit further and the likely strong gallop may also help the selection who can be a little keen in the early stages of his races.

Trainer William Knight has performed wonders with Group Two winner Sir Busker for Dual Identity's owners, and this horse could well be following a similar path to a higher level.

Under a 4lb penalty but still 3lb well-in after being reassessed for his recent Doncaster win, Mujtaba is theoretically the best handicapped horse in the field though many of his rivals that day had not been running particularly well beforehand. Still, he is a worthy favourite.

The rest of the Newmarket card, which includes three top two-year-old races looks difficult though it may be significant that ZOOLOGY has been pitched into the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes on just his second start after a hugely impressive debut win at Yarmouth two weeks ago.

The Qatar Racing-owned colt recorded a modest overall time due to a slow early pace that day but quickened right away from his rivals to win by four lengths. Clearly, this is a big ask against some smart and race-hardened rivals, but the strapping son of Zoustar is clearly highly regarded, looks very talented and holds an Irish Guineas entry.

At Haydock, HARROW can return to winning form in the Old Boston Handicap.

The Highclere-owned son of El Kabeir gave his owners a lot of fun last season when completing a hat-trick of wins in August and September including when beating Alflaila and Ever Given (who are now rated 109 and 111) at York and Doncaster respectively.

Harrow has struggled to match those efforts as a three-year-old but, just over a fortnight ago, he produced a much better effort on his first start since being gelded when a staying-on third behind Godolphin's New Kingdom over seven furlongs at the St Leger meeting.

Back to a mile now and potentially very well handicapped off a mark of 93 (with Harry Davies taking off an additional 3lb), the back-to-form grey looks sure to run well in receipt of weight from most of his rivals.
