"This is going to be his Gold Cup, he's tailor-made for this" | Charlie Hall Chase and Ascot preview

Saturday's Bateaux London Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Ascot has attracted a competitive field in which there are several leading contenders, but the top weighted GOOD BOY BOBBY could prove the class act.

This is the nine-year-old's first outing since the Grand National in April when he had a rough passage and was eventually pulled up, but Daryl Jacob's mount had looked very progressive earlier in the season making a winning reappearance almost exactly a year ago at Wetherby before finishing second to Aye Right in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle, and then returning to Wetherby to win the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase on Boxing Day.

Unlike most of his rivals here, Good Boy Bobby has an impressive record first time out and has won on his October or November seasonal debut four times in the last five seasons, the only defeat coming when beaten a head and splitting the talented Brewinupastorm and Midnight Shadow (with Global Citizen fourth) in a beginners chase at Carlisle in October, 2019.

Now just 2lb above his last winning mark and with the Nigel Twiston Davies team threatening to strike top form, he looks a bit overpriced.

Timeform Flat Offer

Earlier, CALL OF THE WILD is potentially well-handicapped in the Bateaux London Handicap Hurdle.

This half brother to the useful Flat/hurdles winner Chatez (also trained by Alan King and best at two miles) proved a useful novice last season, and his debut second to Onemorefortheroad at Stratford turned out to be a good effort given the winner's subsequent progress.

Call Of The Wild went on to win small field contests at Kempton and Doncaster (giving 7lb and a near five length beating to the now 129-rated and recent Kempton winner Boombawn) and can be excused a subsequent defeat behind Pull Again Green and Royaume Uni over two-and-a-half miles at Cheltenham as he was suffering from heat-stress after the race.

On pedigree, he was not guaranteed to stay the trip that day and, dropped back in trip for a stable in form and off a mark of 130, he should be competitive.

Later on, CAMULUS can prove the bet of the day in the Grundon Waste Management Conditional Jockeys Novices' Handicap Hurdle.

This lightly-raced, Christian Williams-trained son of Walk In The Park took a big step forward from his previous hurdling debut when shaking up the odds-on Time Flies By at Fontwell over this trip ten days ago when he travelled well before being outpointed by the 122-rated winner on the run-in with Dancing Harry, an 83-rated stayer on the Flat, over four lengths back in third.

A half-brother to the Irish Grand National winner Free Wheelin Dylan out of a mare from the family of Gaye Brief and Gaye Chance, Camulus is bred to be much better than his current mark of 101 and, with the promising Ellis Collier taking off an additional 8lb, this looks a good opportunity.
