Fran Berry column ahead of Friday at Glorious Goodwood

Fran Berry reflects on Thundering Blue's Sky Bet York Stakes win and looks ahead to his rides over the next couple of days at Ffos Las and Goodwood.

Firstly, I have to reflect on last weekend's Sky Bet York Stakes victory on Thundering Blue - it was a big, big call from David Menuisier and the team to run him there after being beaten the last time in the John Smith's Cup.

It just showed how much he likes York and he put up a really game performance to get up close home and win.

He's gone up just 2lb for that which did surprise me a little but they've clearly used Andrew Balding's horse in second and he's rated 95 so they've taken the form literally. It makes it tempting to back into the big handicaps again but it's great to have options with him.

To my mind he's obviously very effective going 10 furlongs and the drop of rain that arrived in York on Friday was a big plus. I do look forward to riding him over a mile and a half at some stage in the future though.

It was great to keep the ball rolling for David on Wednesday night with History Writer winning at Sandown.

He likes to chase a strong pace so has done extremely well to win so well in a six-runner field and it would be nice to think there's a lot more to come from him as he continues to progress in the autumn.

I'm off to Ffos Las for five rides on Thursday evening and a couple of them stand out at this stage.

Storm Melody of Jonjo O'Neill's got back on form at Chepstow on his last start and getting his head in front might just give him that bit of confidence to go and win again.

Bezos for Ian Williams definitely has snippets of form to suggest he's capable of winning a race like the Mintbet Free Bets For Life Handicap.

I've got a couple of rides at Glorious Goodwood on Friday, including Chief Ironside in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes.

He was a bit disappointing last time but won well at Newmarket prior to that, making all at the July Course at a very strong pace. He's up in class but looks progressive and I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up a big show in a small field on a front-runners track.

I'm on Hors De Combat in the Unibet Golden Mile Handicap and he's obviously a very decent horse on his day.

He ran a good race on the Hunt Cup at Ascot, finishing sixth despite possibly not being drawn on the right side.

A lot of his form is on flat tracks and straight tracks but he's run well at Goodwood in the past and has a definite each-way chance from his middle draw providing he gets some luck in running.

I'm booked to ride Juneau for Mark Johnston but she ran a fraction disappointingly on Wednesday and we'll have to see if she turns out again quickly.
