Forge Meadow wins for Jessica Harrington

Forge Meadow forced her way into the Cheltenham picture with an impressive success in the Paddy Power Novice Hurdle at Naas.

Sent off at 6/1 for the Grade Two contest, the Beneficial filly made the most of her allowances – she got 13lb from odds-on favourite Any Second Now – to seal an easy eight-length success.

Peace News took them along for the first three quarters of a mile, but he fell back through the field as Pravalaguna pressed on.

Any Second Now and Joey Sasa travelled well in behind and that duo were in contention rounding the turn for home, but neither had an answer to Forge Meadow’s superior turn of foot in the straight.

The victory marked a double for jockey Robbie Power, who steered Edwulf to success in the previous race.

“The last time she was too far out of it but she was very good today and cantered well,” said winning trainer Jessica Harrington.

“She’s learned to relax a bit more and I think she’ll be better on better ground.

“I was very worried about the ground today. I thought it was going to be too heavy.

“She’ll be going for the mares’ novice now. Two miles is her trip at the moment and it’s a nice race to win.”

It was a birthday winner for Harrington who celebrated her 70th birthday on Saturday.

“It’s cured the hangover anyway!” she said.

Forge Meadow was cut to 6/1 by Sky Bet (NRNB) for the Trull House Stud Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Edwulf staked a claim for the four-mile National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham after winning the Woodlands 100 Club Nas Na Riogh Novice Handicap Chase.

"Puppy (Power) gave him a great ride. He jumped very well today and I'm delighted with him," said O'Brien.

"I always thought he was better than a handicapper but his jumping has let him down all year. Hopefully he can keep things together now.

"He's in the four-miler and the RSA, and there is also the Leinster National back here. We'll see how he comes out of this and make a plan for him.

"He gets three miles, and he has as good a chance as any horse of getting four but you don't know until you run."
