Charlie Fellowes admits he is torn on the decision to close Kempton Park racecourse.
The 31-year-old, who has saddled 18 winners in 92 races at the track, told Oddschecker that he initially saw no downside in cashing in on the “golden egg” that an all-weather track presented.
The fact that the Owners & Trainers room is usually full has cast doubt in his mind over the decision, which he says is going to cost “a hell of a lot more” that the £100million originally quoted.
"[Kempton] is the most easily accessible for a vast majority of pretty wealthy people, it is in one of the most affluent areas of the country, where our owners are going to come from or do come from." Fellowes said.
"Is, therefore, moving a track where we have more racing than anywhere else, up to Newmarket where it’s a good hour and a half, two hours drive… is that a really good idea?
"Are we potentially putting off a lot of owners who love going racing because it’s 15 or 20 minutes down the road, and probably aren’t going to travel two hours to go?"
