Review of the action from Saturday's meeting at Ascot

A review of the action from Saturday's meeting at Ascot where Roger Varian completed a 210/1 four-timer.

Fab four for Varian

Roger Varian was the trainer to follow at Ascot, completing a sparkling 210/1 four-timer courtesy of Look Closely (7/2), Shandoz (10/3), Laneqash (6/4) and Line Of Departure (10/3).

The former provided leg three and he earned Sky Bet Ebor quotes following his victory in the Thames Hospice Handicap.

It was harder work than looked likely at the furlong pole for having gone clear, he was all-out at the line to fend off Hyanna (22/1) by a head.

"Roger is having a good day and he won well here the last day. It was a very similar scenario, we sat second and took it up two-and-a-half furlongs out. He won going away there but went up eight pounds," said winning jockey Andrea Atzeni.

"He was drawn 12 of 12 here which is a help as he's not a horse who likes to be crowded, he does his own thing. I took it up early enough and he was probably idling a bit in front. He's going the right way and stays very well."

Paddy Power and Betfair make him a 14/1 chance for the York showpiece.

Lanaqash was well-backed prior to making his debut in the Berkshire Community Foundation 'Newcomers' Maiden Stakes and didn't disappoint.

The son of Cable Bay travelled strongly under Jim Crowley and picked up nicely to put the race to bed at the furlong pole.

He showed signs of greenness by drifting right in front but went on to score by three lengths from Ajrad, owned like the winner by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

David Egan partnered the other two winners starting with Line Of Departure in the Berkshire Vision Nursery and the pair finished strongly to put their seal on matters.

5/2 favourite Ataser tried to go with him but was a length-and-a-quarter down at the line.

The winning rider said: "On his first two starts he had blinkers on which is unlike one of Mr Varian's. He was just so laidback and lazy and it took him a couple of runs to wake up and realise his job.

"He won well. He broke well and was in a good position to pounce off a slow pace and sustained his run all the way to the line."

He delivered Shandoz to perfection to win the Alistair Haggis Memorial Handicap.

11/4 favourite Grand Bazaar looked set to strike for the John Gosden team but was overhauled in the dying strides by the winner.

"It was his first run for a while and I was happy to bide my time. They went a nice gallop and my horse produced a nice sustained challenge all the way to the line," the winning rider said.

"The closer we were getting to the line the more he was picking up and it was a great comeback run. His form has worked out great from his previous races and there's more to come."

Fellows and Turner strike again

Hayley Turner and Charlie Fellowes renewed their formidable Ascot partnership as Via Serendipity bounced back to form to land the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Celebration Handicap.

The six-year-old was having his first start for the Nemmarket trainer after switching from Stuart Williams' yard and landed a fair touch, being sent off the 7/2 favourite.

Held up early, he made smooth headway to hit the front inside the distance and run out a ready two-and-a-half lengths winner.

“That’s three out of three I’ve had for Charlie here, all over the straight mile. It was great as the horse has moved yards recently and Charlie decided to change tactics. He told me to drop him out and he did it really well,” the winning jockey told ITV Racing.

“He’s a six-year-old and they get wise to racing and maybe just the change of scenery and riding him differently perked him up again.

“He clearly needed a bit of cover and relaxing early and I’m really pleased.”

Dwyer delivers on Brave

Martin Dwyer brought Island Brave with a storming run down the outside of the field to spring a 33/1 surprise in the Dubai Duty Free Millenium Millionaire Handicap.

Heather Main’s charge was bouncing back to form after a lack-lustre spell and was in command in the final 50 yards, beating Mondain (22/1) by a length-and-a-half.

“It’s one of the few occasions in my career when I’ve ridden completely to instructions and done everything I was told to do,” the winning rider said.

“He’s a bit of a character but has ability. He’s a slow-burner who doesn’t like to be hassled early and Heather said switch wide when you turn in and he took off for me.”

Chill Chill set for higher grade

On a blisteringly-hot afternoon Chill Chill was an appropriate winner of the ITV Home Of Terrestrial Racing Handicap.

Well-backed through the morning, the 7/2 favourite showed a smart turn of foot to win by a length-and-three-quarters and leave trainer Andrew Balding planning a step up in class.

"She's a lovely filly and quite an important one for us and King Power Racing as she's a sister to Beat The Bank, the first horse the chairman bought and who was a star for us," he told ITV Racing.

"It is lovely to think we might breed from her one day and the way she won here you'd think Black Type might be an option next time."
