Ed Chamberlin: Expert Eye's Dewhurst, Ballydoyle's Fillies' Mile & John Constable's Cesarewitch?

Ed Chamberlin surveys the juvenile picture on a stellar Group One weekend at Newmarket, while, if his maths is correct, he can't see past the favourite in the Cesarewitch.

It’s all about Expert Eye in the Dewhurst and it’s no secret that Saturday’s show on ITV will revolve around this horse.

It’s such a good story. You’ve got the resurgence of Sir Michael Stoute this season, via Ulysses, primarily, but also Expert Eye, a two-year-old that has all the credentials of a bona fide 2000 Guineas colt.

The talk before Goodwood was that he must be very good. Just the fact that Sir Michael Stoute had a runner in the Vintage Stakes, a precocious two-year-old, suggested that.

And I thought it was the performance of Glorious Goodwood. He was brilliant. And now he aims to give his trainer his first Dewhurst winner in over 30 years.

He’s not clear on ratings, there’s a lot of hype in that price. He’s rated virtually level with U S Navy Flag, who won the Middle Park the other day, and yet he’s much shorter in the betting. But I think he’s worth the hype. I think, and hope, he wins.

Then there’s the Juddmonte story. They just keep on producing these superstars, the likes of Rainbow Quest, Dancing Brave, Frankel and Kingman, it’s such a classy operation.

I’ve been lucky enough to follow one of the Frankel foals, I’ve been to Banstead Manor three or four times now, and they’re going to continue to produce these world-class racehorses with the bloodlines they’ve got.

The latest Juddmonte superstar, Enable, has been in the headlines again this week after it was announced she would stay in training as a four-year-old and that’s great news for the sport.

She’s been such a big part of the narrative throughout the season from her win at Chester in May right through to that spectacular Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, so, full marks to everyone involved with keeping her in training.

It’s such a sporting decision. If I owned Enable she’d be straight off to the paddocks wrapped up in cotton wool!

For the sport, it’s so important that operation continues. We have lost a few, the latest example being Ballymacoll Stud, and I just loved at Chantilly the other day seeing younger members of Khalid Abdullah’s family clearly loving it and really enjoying it. It’s vital that dynasty continues for the sake of our game.

Ballydoyle go the extra Mile

For all that Ballydoyle have dominated the sport they’ve not really had a Frankel like Juddmonte and that’s what they’ll be looking for in the years ahead.

This weekend the master of Ballydoyle, Aidan O’Brien, could get closer to the Bobby Frankel world record of 25 Group/Grade One wins in a calendar year and he could well get number 24 in the Fillies’ Mile on Friday.

Hopefully he’ll break the record in front of the ITV cameras on Champions Day, as we’ll have a huge audience and it would be a fantastic occasion, but before that he could add to his tally at Newmarket and he’s thrown the kitchen sink at Friday’s Group One.

He’s going for a four-timer in the race having won it the last three years with Together Forever, Minding and Rhododendron, and this year he has the first three in the betting in the shape of Happily, Magical and September.

I expect one of that trio to win, don’t ask me who, but Happily could be an Oaks filly going forward. It just shows the strength in depth of the fillies this year at Ballydoyle that he can have the first three in the betting for the Fillies’ Mile and his 1000 Guineas favourite, Clemmie, isn’t among them.

The vibe before Clemmie’s race was that if she won over six furlongs she’d be very good. The doubt was whether she’d have the speed to win over that trip.

For her to win in that fashion over six furlongs she’s going to be a much better horse over a mile to me. I don’t often get excited about a horse at 7/2 months and months in advance but even that still seems big.

I think she’ll win the Guineas, I think she’s very, very good. A textbook Aidan O’Brien two-year-old that will just get better and better as she matures. She’s the best juvenile filly I’ve seen this season, that’s for sure.

Constable to paint a picture in Cesarewitch

Mick Fitzgerald always tells me ‘take the jumps rating and take 45lb off and that’s what they should be rated on the Flat’ and, if that’s the case, John Constable is 23lb well in in Saturday’s Cesarewitch.

He’s improved massively over timber and I can see him coming there absolutely swinging under Jim Crowley on Saturday, even though that sort of thing doesn’t normally happen in this race.

The jumps horses are tougher and relish the trip, as has been proven many times over the years, so I do think he’s going to take an awful lot of beating in that race.

Big-priced horses have dominated this race in recent years, though, so if you are looking for one each-way then perhaps Angel Gabrial can bounce back to form for Richard Fahey.

I know he hasn’t looked like it recently, but he’s so well handicapped now. The trainer’s a very clever man, as well, so I’ll be reading his Sporting Life column with interest to see if he’s showing enough sparkle at home.

But, if I could only have one, I’d have to go with John Constable. He could just be chucked in.
