Defoe given green light for Tattersalls Gold Cup

Roger Varian has given Defoe the green light to contest the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on May 27.

The Newmarket handler will step the Dalakhani colt back up to Group One company for a shot at the extended mile-and-a-quarter prize having run out an impressive winner of a Group Two at Newmarket last time out.

Varian said: "I think it's highly likely that Defoe will run in Ireland next weekend. We've been happy with him since (Newmarket). I nominated it as a plan after Newbury really and then we went to Newmarket in between as he was so well.

"He really seems in great form at home and the plan is his next race will be the Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland. We need everything to go right between now and then, but that's the plan.

"It won't be a new trip as he won two nice races over 10 furlongs last year, but it will be his first time at Group level over that trip. He is in great form, though, and we are looking forward to it."
