Matt Brocklebank heads to Kempton on Monday evening where he puts faith in a handicap newcomer for Roger Charlton...

Sporting Life Daily Nap, September 16

IMPERIUM is fancied to step up to the plate in the 32Red Handicap at Kempton on Monday evening.

It's a first foray into a race of this nature for the gelded son of Frankel, who has looked every inch a stayer in the making during his three qualifying runs.

He debuted over this 12-furlong trip at Ascot in May where he looked in need of the experience but did show a spark of ability when fourth in a race contested by Kesia and Cape Cavalli, the runner-up that day going on to win a nice race at Goodwood the other week.

A switch to Bath on lively ground didn't suit with Imperium a well-held third but she showed a touch more than sixth of 11 in a nice novice event over 10 furlongs last time out.

That race was won by Away He Goes who is now rated 95 having gone in again under a penalty at Newmarket since, while the second Passion And Glory has won, as has the third Hamish, who took the Sky Bet Melrose off a mark of 92 and has now gone up to 98.

So in the context of this race it was a warm one to say the least and Roger Charlton's horse should find himself far more at home in these much cooler waters, especially having been handed an initial mark of 70.

It's no gimme - Alma Linda won 10 days ago and could have a bit more to offer for Sir Mark Prescott, while Hermosura won well over this course and distance recently, though she did get the run of things out in front with no pace pressure whatsoever.

They are both respected but it's hoped Imperium could be several steps ahead of the handicapper with the switch to all-weather action expected to suit.

Sporting Life Daily Nap, September 17

LORD OF THE ALPS ran a solid race on his nursery debut at Beverley, chasing home G For Gabrial.

That only tells half the story though as he was too keen for his own good there and having made his move earlier than ideal, didn't have the petrol left in the tank for the final climb to the line.

The track at Redcar should suit him on Tuesday and from only a pound higher mark, he makes plenty of appeal in the Market Cross Jewellers Nursery.

Karl Burke's Light The Fuse is a danger having finished second on his own nursery debut at Epsom and could be capable of better but the selection looked a well handicapped horse at Beverley and if settling better here, will be very hard to beat.
