Our gallops watcher is predicting a good weekend for Hambleton handler Kevin Ryan, who sends East for the Irish 1,000 Guineas on Sunday.

Battaash (4.00 Haydock)

Battaash can follow up his last year’s success in the Group 2 Armstrong Aggregates Temple Stakes at Haydock on Saturday. Charlie Hills was left disappointed after his star sprinter from the 2017 season did not quite live up to the promise from that campaign, even though he did add to his win when impressing in a Group 2 at Goodwood in July. It remains to be seen if a breathing operation will now allow him to attain his full potential, but he has been working very nicely, and has yet to be beaten on his seasonal reappearance.

Pass The Gin (2.20 Chester)

Pass The Gin has a good record at Chester and should go well for Andrew Balding in the Chester Heritage Festival Fillies Handicap. Although only fourth at the big meeting here 17 days ago, he met with problems in running, and looks worth another chance. He is well versed in handling these tight turns.

Hero Hero (1.45 Chester)

Balding loves to have winners here, and should kick the afternoon off on the right note with Hero Hero in the Controlled Solutions Group Novice Stakes. The son of No Nay Never takes a drop in class after meeting the very exciting Jubiloso when odds-on at Chelmsford last time, and looks to have found a good opportunity to land a deserved first win.

Flashcard (2.30 Goodwood)

The Kingsclere maestro has a busy afternoon at the Deeside track, but he is also busy elsewhere and saddles the interesting Flashcard in the Betfair Each-Way Edge Handicap at Goodwood. He just missed out of a very big prize in a sales race at the Curragh on his final start of a light juvenile campaign, but he won his other two races at Salisbury very well, and is expected to run a big race on his handicap debut.

Extra Elusive (1.55 Goodwood)

Extra Elusive can make it third time lucky this season in the Listed Betfair Best Odds On ITV Races Festival Stakes. The Beckhampton team are now in better form than when this four-year-old produced two solid performances on his first two outings, and the fitting of blinkers for the first time should also sharpen him up. Richard Hughes’ consistent Glendevon could be the big danger.

Findhorn (4.15 York)

29-5OR: -
5/1

Kevin Ryan continued his love affair with York when it comes to introducing smart two-year-olds at the recent Dante Festival, and he should go close again with newcomer Findhorn in the Yorkshire Regiment British Novice Median Auction Stakes. Although he may not be as clued up as his impressive winner on the second day of that three day meeting, Repartee, the son Of Kyllachy works nicely, and whatever happens here, he is one to note for the future.

Goodwood Rebel (5.50 Salisbury)

Ralph Beckett's Goodwood Rebel took his time to learn his job on his debut here 23 days ago, but he ran on nicely to finish an eye-catching fifth, and should give the promising Born To Destroy plenty to think about in the George Smith Horseboxes Maiden at Salisbury.

Chapmanshype (8.05 Ffos Las)

Jamie Snowden and Gavin Sheehan have made a flying start to the jumps season, and look set for another success with Chapmanshype in the Cartref Croeso Handicap Hurdle at Ffos Las. The five year old was no match for a highly rated youngster from the Alan King team at Chepstow last month, but he looks nicely weighted for his debut at this level, and is improving with racing.

Beau Sancy (3.35 Kelso)

710-6OR: 114BF

Sheehan travels up to Kelso from his Lambourn base to ride the fancied Some Day Soon for Snowden in the opening Novices Hurdle, but of more punting interest may be Ollly Murphy's Beau Sancy in the valuable Ayrton Castle Handicap Chase. A winner of three races in a row after a wind op last October, the Blue Bresil gelding has undergone more surgery of a similar nature, and is reported in good nick after a five month absence.

East (4.10 Curragh)

East can give Ryan his first Classic success in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Sunday. A very high-class juvenile last season with a Group 3 win and a very good Breeders Cup second behind her, she was quietly fancied in the French Guineas at Longchamp on her comeback two weeks ago and duly ran a great race to finish third. Connections felt she may well have won had she not had to travel wide on the home turn from her outside draw, and she has taken those exertions well.
