Big-race trends and stats: Grand National Trial

We've teamed up with Weatherbys to produce the trends ahead of Saturday's Grand National Trial at Haydock, with Neil Mulholland taken to land the prize.

GRAND NATIONAL TRIAL TRENDS

  • 10/10- Aged 8 or older
  • 9/10- Had between 8-14 chase starts
  • 9/10- Had won a chase over 3m2f or further
  • 8/10- Started at 10-1 or less
  • 7/10- Won earlier in season (5/10 won LTO)
  • 7/10- Officially rated between 138-146
  • LAST YEAR’S WINNER: YALA ENKI

BETTRENDS SELECTION: IMPULSIVE STAR

Although he is slightly less experienced than the usual winner of this race Impulsive Star ticks plenty of boxes and can follow up his recent Classic Chase success for Neil Mulholland. The trip won’t be a problem, he is an improving young chaser and he looks well weighted.

Course-and-distance winner Red Infantry also comes out well against the highlighted trends. Another with proven stamina in the bag, the first time blinkers might bring about a little further improvement in Ian Williams’ nine-year-old.

Of the remainder, market leader Ramses de Teillee bids to become the third horse to win this in the past nine years, on the back of finishing second in the Welsh Grand National. He is very much on the up as a staying chaser, although he is younger than ideal, being only seven. He is potentially a class above a lot of these and is, therefore, still respected.

Bettrends 1-2-3:

  1. Impulsive Star
  2. Red Infantry
  3. Ramses de Teillee
