Race Report

Banksea was delivered with typical Jamie Spencer confidence to win the Be Wiser Insurance Spring Cup in devastating style.

Entering the final furlong the Luca Cumani-trained four-year-old, who had been gelded since he was sent off favourite for the Cambridgeshire last time out, still had a wall of horses in front of him.

Fastnet Tempest had shot clear under Franny Norton but then appeared to be spooked by the wide expanse in front of him and became hard to steer.

His waywardness may have cost him second as Another Touch took that spot, but it would have been hard for him to resist the late lunge of Banksea (9-1), who sprouted wings close home to win going away.

It was a first winner of the turf season for Cumani, who landed the race two years ago with Ayaar.

Reaction

Sara Cumani, wife of the winning trainer, said: "It is amazing what a little operation can do. He is a nice horse and always has been a good horse. Jamie Spencer said he was severely hampered and that took him back several places. He had to go from third gear to top gear very quick and he did very well to do that. I think the Hunt Cup and races like that will be on the agenda."

*Both Simon Holt and Ben Linfoot's Value Bet tipped up Banksea on Friday evening.
