Jakob Fuglsang celebrated his first grand tour stage victory after beating off Great Britain's Tao Geoghegan to win stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana in Alto de La Cubilla.

The Astana rider, 34, powered his way up the Spanish mountains to finish 22 seconds ahead of Team Ineos' Geogehgan, while Astana team-mate Luis Leon Sanchez finished third.

James Knox (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) was part of the pack heading into the final few kilometres, but the Brit fell away to finish fourth.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) extended his overall lead of the race ahead of second-placed Alejando Valverde (Movistar) after gaining 22 seconds on the Spaniard.

The riders will have a rest day on Tuesday, heading into Wednesday's stage 17.
