Ben Proud has a spot at Budapest World Championships

Ben Proud secured a spot at the Budapest World Championships as he broke his own 50 metres freestyle British record in Sheffield on Saturday.

The penultimate night of the British Championships at Ponds Forge saw Proud retain his title in a time of 21.32 seconds.

The 22-year-old Commonwealth champion - whose previous national record time was 21.54secs - told British Swimming: "It feels great to have lowered that record.

"You never know what time you are going to swim in a 50m race so when I touched my hand on the wall and saw 21.32 I thought 'oh that's quite good'.

"It's impressive for this time in the season. I'm still looking to move that on as well.

"To be honest I'm not happy with how I swam it and I think I could have gone faster but it is what it is.

"Fast times at this time of the year don't really mean that much so all I have to do is keep working hard and by Budapest if I can move that time on that would be great."

Holly Hibbott clocked a time that puts her in contention for Worlds selection as she claimed her first senior British title by winning the 400m freestyle ahead of Olympic silver-medallist Jazz Carlin.

Max Litchfield also registered a 'consideration' time as he won the 200m individual medley.

Meanwhile, there were victories for Hannah Miley in the women's 200m IM event - which saw Olympic silver medallist Siobhan-Marie O'Connor disqualified for a false start having previously won the race - and Georgia Davies in the 50m backstroke.
