The Washington Capitals secured first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena.

Philipp Grubauer made 36 saves for his seventh win in eight starts in what was Alexander Ovechkin's 1000th game for the Capitals.

T.J. Oshie, Dmitry Orlov and Tom Wilson had the Capitals 3-0 early in the third period before Patric Hornqvist replied for the Penguins.

Claude Giroux scored twice as the Philadephia Flyers moved within two points of second in the Metropolitan Division after a 4-3 overtime win over the Eastern Conference leading Boston Bruins.
