We continue with five sporting highlights for the week ahead.

Racing - William Hill Ayr Gold Cup

When: Saturday

Where: Ayr

TV: ITV Racing/Racing TV

Sky Bet odds

There was a surprise on Monday when Victory Day, set to start a warm favourite for William Haggas, didn't feature among the six-day entries.

In his absence Buffer Zone heads the market for Ger Lyons and he was a ready winner of a big handicap at the Curragh at the weekend. He's improving and deserves his place in the betting.

David O'Meara holds a strong hand though and Summerghand and Arecibo must be on any shortlist but Gulliver might just be the one to land this prize for the North Yorkshire trainer.

He's dropped to a handy mark and made very good late headway when third behind Buffer Zone at the weekend. He was short of room at a crucial stage but finished strongly and looks tailormade for this race.

Recommended bet: Gulliver

Football – Champions League

When: Tuesday/Wednesday

Where: Across Europe

TV: BT Sport

Sky Bet odds

Europe’s elite club competition returns with the group stages getting underway this week.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham are the English contingent this season and all are in televised action across the two days.

Chelsea welcome LaLiga outfit Valencia, who have recently been forced into a managerial change while Liverpool travel to Napoli – a venue where they were defeated during their successful 2018/19 campaign. Both of those fixtures take place on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Pep Guardiola’s City side are in Ukraine as they face Shakhtar Donetsk, while Tottenham – beaten finalists last season – kick off their efforts at a slightly earlier time of 17:55 away at Olympiacos.

The headline fixtures come on the second day of action with Atletico Madrid hosting Juventus while PSG take on Real Madrid – both of those games are televised and kick-off at 20:00.

Recommended bet: Bayern Munich to win the Champions League at 14/1

Rugby Union - World Cup

When: Friday September 20 – Saturday November 2

Where: Japan

TV: ITV & ITV 4

Sky Bet odds

The third biggest sporting tournament in the world is played in Asia for the first time. It’s being billed as the most open Rugby World Cup ever, with five nations capable of lifting the famous William Webb Ellis Trophy.

New Zealand are favourites to win for a third constructive time and it will be a shock if they fail. South Africa and England’s form and strengthen in depth suggest they are the All Blacks biggest threats, while Wales are confident after winning the Six Nations and Ireland are the number one world ranked side.

As hosts, Japan will be keen to cause a shock and reach the knock-out stages at the expense of Scotland, while Fiji and Samoa will provided some magic moments and a few, literal, blackeyes to opponents.

Recommend bet: South Africa to win Rugby World Cup at 9/2

Golf - BMW PGA Championship

When: Thursday to Sunday

Where: Wentworth

TV: Sky Sports Golf

Sky Bet odds

Just because the PGA Tour have dished out their end-of-season prizes doesn’t mean the big golf events are over for the year as the European Tour’s Race To Dubai kicks back into gear with their flagship event taking place this week at Wentworth – the BMW PGA Championship.

The event has moved from a traditional May date to September after the major championship reshuffle, and a star-studded field will descend on the lavish Surrey course, with the event also marking the start of points scoring for Ryder Cup qualification.

Defending champion Francesco Molinari is joined by the likes of Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, John Rahm and Paul Casey, along with Open champion Shane Lowry, while Patrick Reed and fellow Americans Tony Finau and Billy Horschel will make their tournament debuts.

Formula One - Singapore Grand Prix

When: Sunday

Where: Singapore

TV: Sky Sports Formula One

Sky Bet odds

Charles Leclerc is the in-form driver and heads to Singapore on the back of brilliant victories at the Belgium Grand Prix and Italian Grand Prix.

He will be hopeful of another bold showing in Singapore but Lewis Hamilton still leads the Driver Standings and will be keen to resume winnings ways having proven victorious at this track 12 months ago.

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel has four Singapore Grand Prix wins to his name already and is another big name who will be expected to come to the fore when the action gets under way.
