Mark Cavendish suffers opening day crash in Tour de Pologne

Mark Cavendish's bid for a first win in 17 months hit the skids as the Manx rider crashed on the opening day of the Tour de Pologne.

The 34-year-old crashed with 3.5km to go on the first day but was able to get back on his bike and close out the stage.

Bora-Hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann took the opening stage and race lead, the German extending his fine form from the Giro d'Italia.

Colombia's Fernando Gaviria claimed second, with Fabio Jakobsen finishing third.
