We've got our best bets from Sunday's slate of NFL games including a huge showdown between the Patriots and Steelers.
Sunday Handicap Treble
1pt Vikings (-5) Patriots (-2) LA Rams (-8.5) all to win at 4/1
An intriguing contest between two wild card chasers who can probably not afford to lose this one. It’s a huge swing game for the Vikings in particular who occupy the last play-off spot as it stands but would see their chances halved with a defeat.
The Dolphins are still in dreamland after their last-play miracle beat the Patriots last week but they’ve lost five straight outside of Miami, by an average of 16 points as well, and the Vikings defence is especially on their home patch.
Minnesota have lost the last two and three of the last four but when you consider they were three road losses against Chicago, New England and Seattle they don’t seem so bad. They’ve a new offensive coordinator on board to try and get more out of Kirk Cousins and his talented receivers and they’re too good to endure another bad day at the office.
Verdict: Vikings to win (-5) at 8/13
This is a great rivalry between two powerhouse teams and powerhouse quarterbacks, but usually both Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady are coming off shock defeats as they both look to bounce back.
The Pats were stunned on the last play by Miami while Pittsburgh suffered a stunning reversal against lowly Oakland, and now face a team they’ve lost to in their last five meetings and a QB in Brady who’s beaten them seven times, thrown 23 TDs and just one interception in 12 years of rivalry.
Pittsburgh’s need is greater with Baltimore breathing down their necks just half a game behind in the AFC North but that Oakland loss was worrying and if James Conner is out again that’ll be a huge blow.
Backing against the Steelers at home is a big non-no but so is backing against Brady, coming off a loss, in a big rivalry game. Big Ben will get plenty of yardage and a score or two but the Pats will have a plan to get this job done.
Verdict: Patriots win (-2) at 10/11
Philly won in LA a year ago but much has changed since then as the Rams look even better than last season while the Eagles show little sign of being able to retain their Super Bowl title – needing to win their last three games just to stand a chance.
QB Carson Wentz was injured in this fixture last season and won’t play at all after being ruled out, meaning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles returns, but that position if far from Philly’s major problem with a host of injuries and disjointed performances hindering them all season.
If Philly are to bag an upset they’ll need to run the ball and add to their record of going 6-0 when running it 27 times in a game and 0-7 when they don’t. Rookie Josh Adams is now the starting running back and needs a big game.
The Rams offence has struggled the last two games but Jared Goff and Todd Gurley will hope to rebound against the 25th ranked Eagles defence, and Sean McVay is yet to lose two in a row as Rams head coach.
Verdict: LA Rams win (-8.5) at 8/13
