The San Francisco 49ers have suffered a huge blow after it was confirmed that star quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be out for the season with a torn ACL.
Garoppolo limped out of Sunday’s 38-27 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs and a MRI on Monday confirmed the full extent of the injury and that his season was over.
The 49ers shelled out a then-record $137m for Garoppolo’s contract after he arrived from the New England Patriots and instantly lit up what was previously a stuttering offence.
San Francisco won their last five games of the season and, although they started 1-2 this year their golden boy quarterback still looked the part.
CJ Beathard will stand in for now but the team also plans to look at other free agent options such as Tom Savage and TJ Yates.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan admits it is a huge blow to lose their star an, but still feels Garoppolo can have a big future with the 49ers once he’s back from injury.
“Jimmy is a tough person, he’ll bounce back from this and be ready to go for next year,” said Shanahan.
"There's not a doubt in my mind that he'll come back next year and be the same guy."
The 49ers have been hurt badly by injuries t their playmakers, with starting running back Jerick McKinnon also out for the season with a torn ACL.
