NEXT BEST: Slippy Maska (T1, 3.29 Perry Barr)

TREBLE: Murrys Act (T6, 2.21 Perry Barr)

By Richard Wilson

The main racing action begins with pastures new this weekend, as the William Hill St Leger begins its tenure at Perry Barr on Sunday afternoon following the closure of Wimbledon.

Connections at the West Midlands venue will be keen for everything to run smoothly following the success that Towcester enjoyed with the Derby during the summer, and all looks set fair for a scintillating competition.

Some classy winners have landed the spoils in recent years, with the likes of Roxholme Dream, Fizzypop Buddy and Ferryforth Fran all on the roll of honour in the last three seasons.

A dour stayer is needed for such a contest, and Kent Cesarewitch winner Slippy Maska (T1) certainly fits that description.

An impressive winner here recently in a hot time of 43.35, the progressive Kinloch Brae bitch has a winnable heat in the first round and has already proven herself as a competition dog.

Boasting an unexposed profile, Hazel Kemp's two-year-old has already accounted for some useful yardsticks like Ribble Atom and Goldies Seb, and rates as a solid bet to make it through her heat at 3.29.

More towards the top end of the market, Cloran Paddy (T2) was third in this event last year and is fancied to make it through without much fuss for three-time winning trainer Charlie Lister.

A Grand Prix winner at Sunderland during the summer, the 2014 dog has been relatively lightly-raced since with this contest in mind and looks poised to appreciate these conditions.

He got the better of Yorkshire St Leger winner Keplar Nine here five days ago with an all-the-way victory and is likely to improve on that performance for his master handler at 2.57.

Derby finalist Murrys Act (T6) runs in the second heat of the day at 2.21 and the stayer is expected to go far in the competition outright.

Kevin Boon’s charge is likely to have been freshened up since losing out in the semi-finals of the All England Cup last week, and this step up to 710m can see the 2015 dog in a much better light.

The likes of Meadow and Jetstream Lynx look open to plenty of improvement, but they don’t have the proven form in the book and could be found wanting when things get tough down the home straight.
