Free greyhounds betting tips: Timeform preview Thursday's TV action at Perry Barr

There is some cracking televised action at Perry Barr on Thursday with finals of both the M Lambe Construction Birmingham Cup and RPGTV St Leger, accompanied by a quality undercard and Joe Nordoff from Timeform provides his best bets from the meeting.

The stayers contest at 7.34 arguably isn’t the strongest of open events on paper with a host of high-end graded performers in opposition and it may well pay to side with GREENHILL JACK (Trap 2, TF124) to come out on top having twice found the competition too hot behind Roxholme Kristof of late.

To his credit, Kim Billingham’s charge is a classy sort in his own right over both four and six bends at Monmore and on recent evidence their rates a distinct chance he can master those closest to him in the battle for an early lead and he may well prove tough to peg back. Student Prince (Trap 3, TF116) was determined when landing a top-grade 660-metre affair at Sheffield last week and may provide the lead threat if able to open-up off the second bend.

One hound who looks particularly well-housed on the undercard is DROOPYS TRAPPER (Trap 6, TF 129) who lines up at 7.51. Steadily brought back to full fitness following a spell on the side-lines, he’s confirmed himself no back number with facile back-to-back A1 victories at Newcastle.

A recent 28.26 C&D trial was a slick workout in anyone’s book and with the majority of his rivals expected to be edging left on the approach to the first bend, he’s fancied to take full advantage. Notouttheway (Trap 5, TF115) may be the one for the forecast play having performed well on his sole previous start here three weeks ago, despite a less-than-ideal passage.

The RPGTV Dash final rates a tremendous contest on paper and of course a race which may well be won at the boxes.

Coolavany Dylan (Trap 4, TF131) has long since established himself as a leading sprinter and has brought his trapping boots to Perry Barr, defeating re-opposing Geelo Brezza (Trap 6, TF126) fair and square on his penultimate start. He may well be up to holding that rival again but it may be worthy of siding with another Sheffield raider REFERENDUM (Trap 2, TF136) to trump the pair.

Tony McKenna’s brindle emerged with the fastest time from the trio of heats seven days ago, his effort all the more meritorious allowing for the fact it was his first competitive start at the Birmingham venue. That experience won’t have been wasted on him and the move to blue will hold no fears for the powerful son of Droopys Jet.

The M Lambe Construction Birmingham Cup final is a most intriguing showdown, not least on account of the race being made up of three middle and three wide seeds and with the distinct possibility of scrimmaging on the approach to the opening corner, particularly out wide, it may pay to take a chance on DROOPYS CARAT (Trap 2) who tops the Timeform ratings on 132.

Runner-up in the East Anglian Derby, Angela Harrison’s charge had to battle well to come out on top in the opening rounds a fortnight ago and in truth looked set to improve on that form, only to be forced to check by re-opposing Blackstone Milo (Trap 1, TF126) when coming to make his challenge at the three-quarter point in his semi-final.

Okay, he may have to play second fiddle initially behind trail-blazing kennel-mate Levante Beach (Trap 3, TF120) but with Blackstone Milo finding himself with an unfamiliar berth on the rails and wide seed Winetavern Curly (Trap 4) likely to be heading right out the boxes and thus potentially holding up both Gonzo (Trap 5) and sponsor John Lambe’s Dolla Wisecrack (Trap 6) it may well open the door for the selection to turn handy and prove too strong on this occasion. At odds as big as 6/1 he’s worth siding with.

The RPGTV St Leger itself understandably revolves around Roxholme Kristof (Trap 5) who could hardly have been more impressive once more in coming from off the pace in his semi-final heat last week to win going away. Hayley Keightley’s charge now boasting a most impressive Timeform master rating of 141. He has plenty of time in hand on final time and, provided he emerges from the opening couple of bends unscathed, should prove tough to beat. However, he’s trading as short as 4/11 which makes little appeal from a win bet perspective.

I’m inclined to side with another high-class sort in the shape of AAYAMZAROYALE (Trap 6, TF128). Mark Wallis’ bitch will, in all likelihood have to do it the hard way from off the pace, yet that may not be too bad a thing with the distinct possibility of a pace duel and potential for scrimmaging on the front end.

The daughter of Ballymac Eske is a clever tracker and was deserving of having her semi-final victory marked up, not least for the fact she was held up mid-race but still managed to loom up off the last bend and clear away impressively. With that in mind, she’s worth backing win and each-way to strike fast and late.

Joe Nordoff's selections

  • Grenhill Jack (Trap 2, 7.34)
  • Droopys Trapper (Trap 6, 7.51)
  • Referendum (Trap 2, 8.06)
  • Droopys Carat (Trap 2, 8.36)
  • Aayamzaroyale (each-way) (Trap 6, 9.11)
