Perry Barr plays host to a cracking midweek card featuring the semi-finals of both the RPGTV St Leger and Birmingham Cu. Joe Nordoff from Timeform gives us his best bets.
Heat two of the RPGTV Puppy Stake takes place at 7.51 and it may pay dividends to side with early-paced MARINAS RECRUIT (Trap 2, TF112) to build on an encouraging C&D trial having made a smashing start to his career down south. Dave Mullins’ charge did well to overcome early trouble when registering an A1 success at home track Romford on his latest competitive outing, recording a good time in the process. The fact he’s drawn between a pair who lack course knowledge may well play in to the hands of the son of Romeo Recruit and a repeat of his 3.55 sectional 7 days ago should soon see him front rank on the rails. Magical Arrow (Trap 5, TF 110) has proved consistent rather than progressive in C&D trials but is another boasting excellent early dash and he is fancied to pose the chief threat.
There are a host of classy sprinters on show in the heats of the RPGTV Dash and GEELO BREZZA (Trap 6, TF124) is fancied to land his respective heat at 8.36. Firmly established as a top-class sprinter, Carl Perry’s charge has been proving consistent on his travels of late, just unable to reel in another class act in the shape of Coolavanny Dylan 7 days ago, his first visit to the Birmingham venue since last summer. Well housed in stripes once more, he holds the edge on the clock over a number of this evening’s rivals and with a similar slick break, is fancied to boss matters out wide, possibly at the chief expense of Tasty Treat (Trap 4, TF120) who showed a nice burst of acceleration when registering success himself last week.
The RPGTV St Leger semi-finals have seen several at the head of the ante post market avoid each other, including Smallmead (Trap 3, TF135) who lines up at 8.52. Undoubtedly a high-class operator, she has produced contrasting performances on each of her two appearances at Perry Barr and promises to be short enough in the betting, so, with that in mind it may pay to take a punt on PIEMANS NOELLE (Trap 1, TF 116). Okay, she strictly has work to do from a ratings perspective but she’s been hard to fault around the Birmingham circuit, encouragingly trapping very smartly from the red jacket on each of her last 2 starts. Arguably undone by getting in to a protracted early duel with Blue Tick George 7 days ago (the pair both collared late on) she does find this 710-metre trip within range as a rule and with another slick exit on the rails, both Ballydoyle Bee (Trap 2, TF 120) and Smallmead may well find her difficult to dislodge on the front end.
The final selection on the card comes in the third heat of the RPGTV Puppy Stake at 9.11 with upwardly mobile Newcastle raider LITTLE VENTURE (Trap 2, TF 105) another fancied to make a bold front-running bid. A son of tremendous tracker Clonbrien Hero, he’s been quick to reach top grade on home soil, holding the admirable Droopys Pilot by ½ length for his latest success in October. It’s interesting to see connections have chosen to give the February 19 whelp two trials around Perry Barr and he can emerge victorious and book his place in next week’s final. Nipsey Hustle (Trap 1) is a member of a promising litter representing Carol Weatherall, clearly not lacking for stamina and he would be a very big threat if able to hold his pitch on the rails around the opening couple of bends.
