Ted Potter Jr claimed his first PGA Tour title for six years with a convincing three-shot win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The 34-year-old was tied for the lead with world number one Dustin Johnson heading into the final round in California but while the latter could only muster a level-par 72, Potter followed his stunning 62 on Saturday with a three-under 69.

His 17-under-par total was three clear of Australia's Jason Day and Americans Johnson, Chez Reavie and Phil Mickelson, with the latter producing a fast finish for the second Sunday in a row with three birdies in his last five holes.

Potter made a nervous start with a three-putt bogey from inside 20 feet on the opening hole, but birdied the long next and surged ahead as fine approaches to the fourth and sixth set up close-range gains. A chip-in birdie on the seventh completed Potter's scoring and he parred his way in for a first triumph since landing the 2012 Greenbrier Classic.

He told the PGA Tour website: "It's just so good right now, to get my second career win after five years away from it. Going back to the masters, it will definitely be another dream come true. Try to get back there and win the Par 3 Contest again - that was a lot of fun. This has just been a blast this week and it's unbelievable right now."

Mickelson's closing flourish saw him sign for a round of 67, with Reavie carding a 68 and Day 70.

"This has been a really fun week," Mickelson told Sky Sports Golf. "I gave it a shot on the back nine - it was a good solid round. It was nice to feel the nerves and make a couple of birdies down the stretch. I'm hitting it as well as I have done in a long time."

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy has failed to make the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The 28-year-old had a five-putt on his Friday round to card a disappointing 74 and followed up with a par 72 to go one-under for the tournament in California.

Four dropped shots on the front nine appeared to put paid to his chances of making the three-under cut, but the Northern Irishman nearly finished with a flourish on the par-5 18th.

After a penalty drop, McIlroy nearly struck an eagle from 240 yards with his shot striking the flag.

Ted Potter Junior put himself into contention on the third day - five birdies and an eagle on the front nine coming as part of a nine-under round of 62.

The American climbed 22 places to sit 14-under for the tournament and tied for the lead with Dustin Johnson who carded a 70.

Johnson, put up at 6/1 by our star golf tipster Ben Coley pre-tournament, is now an odds-on shot (see full list of latest odds below).

Chasing the Americans going into the final round are Australian Jason Day, who sits two shots off the pace after going around in 69, and Troy Merritt, who also sits on 12-under.

Julian Suri sat joint third at the half-way point, but double bogeyed the par-5 14th in a miserable round of 76, while Paul Casey followed up Friday's 70 with the same score on Saturday and sits tied for 13th on eight under.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth followed his opening 72 with rounds of 66 and 70 - with his Saturday round including a deft 82-yard approach shot to set up a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Day two report

Rory McIlroy carded four bogeys and dropped two shots on the fifth as he tumbled down the pack at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The 28-year-old followed his opening round of four-under 68 with a disappointing 74 to sit tied for 87th on one under, 11 shots behind joint leaders Dustin Johnson and Beau Hossler.

Things rapidly unravelled for McIlroy at the par-4 5th - after a strong drive to the edge of the green, he then missed a lengthy eagle and shorter birdie putts before going on to find the hole on his fifth attempt.

Two further dropped shots on the 8th and 9th signed off a miserable round.

Americans Johnson and Hossler, a PGA Tour rookie, share the top spot on 12 under after carding rounds of 64 and 67 respectively.

Johnson, Ben Coley's 6/1 pre-tournament selection, hit five birdies on the front nine and followed up with three on the back nine, the only blot in his book being a bogey on the par-4 15.

Hossler didn't drop a shot in his round and is still very much in contention at the half-way stage.

Among the chasing pack are Troy Merritt, who followed his 67 on Thursday with the same score on Friday, while Phil Mickleson went six under to jump 27 places into tied 5th.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth had a better second day with a five-under round of 66 following his opening day 72.

Day one report

Ben Coley's 6/1 pre-tournament selection Dustin Johnson heads Sky Bet's market for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at 10/3 following an opening round 67 to sit two shots off the pace.

Rory McIlroy (7/1) is one further back from current leaders Kevin Streelman (25/1) and Beau Hossler (22/1). He had five birdies and one bogey to leave him four-under after 15 holes of the Spyglass Hill course, before a wayward drive gave him another bogey on the 16th.

But the four-time major winner rallied to hole a birdie on the 18th and remain among the chasing pack.

American Streelman and compatriot Hossler, a PGA Tour rookie, shared the top spot after both finishing on seven-under 65 on different golf courses.

Streelman shot seven birdies - including one on the final par-4 18th hole - at Spyglass Hill, while Hossler carded the same, with a spectacular 54-foot putt for birdie on the par-4 16th hole at Pebble Beach. Graeme McDowell finished at one-under 71 after double-bogeying the 17th hole.

It was a disappointing day for defending champion Jordan Spieth, however, who had to settle for a round of 72 on the Monterey Peninsula course, making one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars.

Of Coley's other selections, Bradon Harkins fared best, firing a three-under 68.
