Andrew Johnston among US Open qualifiers at Walton Heath

Andrew Johnston was among 15 players to earn an invite for the US Open after Monday's sectional qualifier at Walton Heath.

Johnston made two eagles in the second of two rounds to avoid a play-off by one shot, the second year in succession he's come through this Monday shootout.

Aaron Rai topped the leaderboard to earn his first major appearance, having enjoyed a dream start to the Challenge Tour season with two wins already.

He was chased home by top-ranked Chinese golfer Hao-tong Li, with former US Amateur champion Richie Ramsay and four-time European Tour winner Alex Levy tied for third.

Eddie Pepperell shared fifth with Joel Stalter, Oliver Bekker and Bradley Dredge, while alongside Johnston in ninth were South African pair George Coetzee and Brandon Stone.

That left seven players in a play-off for four remaining places, and first to advance were Paul Dunne and Thomas Aiken as Callum Shinkwin and amateur David Boote exited.

Boote, from Wales, had topped the leaderboard after round one thanks in part to a hole-in-one, only to narrowly miss out.

Finally, after Gregory Bourdy three-putted, recent Portugal winner Matt Wallace and Australia's Wade Ormsby completed 15 additions to the field for the season's second major.

The US Open begins a fortnight on Thursday at Erin Hills, Wisconsin, and qualifiers will hope to emulate Michael Campbell, the New Zealander who made it through at Walton Heath and went on to win at Pinehurst in 2005.
