Dutchman Daan Huizing wins inaugural Jordan Mixed Open

Dutchman Daan Huizing shot a final-round 68 to become the first winner of the Jordan Mixed Open in Aqaba.

England's Meghan MacLaren had led after the first two rounds in the unique event featuring 40 players each from the Ladies European Tour, Challenge Tour and Staysure Tour.

At one stage MacLaren held a five-shot lead after birdieing three of the first five holes in her final round but a nightmare start to the back nine scuppered her chances.

A bogey five at the 10th was followed by a double-bogey six at the 11th and MacLaren eventually had to settle for a level par round of 72.

That left her two shots adrift of Challenge Tour player Huizing, whose four-under-par round featured five birdies and only one dropped shot.

Huizing, 28, told europeantour.com: "It's a big moment for me. I've had a rough time at home recently so this is a really sweet way to prove to myself that I've got it.

"I think it's a great initiative. It was great fun playing in a final group with a Challenge Tour player, a senior tour player and a lady player. It was a great battle. It's a different vibe and very special to be the first winner and I hope it's something that can be continued in the future."

MacLaren admitted it hurt not to come out on top but she was proud to have showcased women's golf on such a stage.

She said: "I'm obviously pretty disappointed not to win this week, having been in such a good position. It was pretty tight coming down the last few holes, so I think it was great entertainment for everybody watching.

"The way the scores panned out throughout the week showed that it absolutely can work with the right thought process and course set-up. Female golfers have done ourselves proud this week."

Dane Martin Simonsen was the big mover on the final day, with eagles at the 14th and 17th holes helping him post an eight-under-par score of 64, lifting him up to third on 12 under.
