Round six report

England's Sam Horsfield completed a dominant display at the European Tour Qualifying School final stage to earn his card for the first time.

The 21-year-old, who was tipped for the top by Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter when he qualified for the US Open as an amateur two years ago, shot a closing 63 over Lumine Golf Club's Lakes Course to win by eight shots on 27 under par.

Poulter soon took to Twitter to congratulate his compatriot, writing: "I'm extremely impressed just like I was 7 years ago with this young man @hr59sam. @EuropeanTour School is a daunting week. Many congratulations to now being employed and I hope you enjoy the new job. May you have a long and successful career mate."

Horsfield's round was the lowest of his professional career, and after earning a place on the 2018 Race to Dubai following the gruelling six-round event in Spain, he said: "All these experiences add up.

"Hopefully I will have the opportunity to one day win on the European Tour or the PGA Tour and I can look back on days like today where I came out here and shot 63 in the final round, while having a lead, which is something that you can't teach and you have to learn by putting yourself in these positions.

"I am not sure I can say I envisaged being here when I first started this journey at First Stage, but I feel as though my game has been good for a while and it really came together this week."

Another Englishman, Charlie Ford, was part of a six-way tie for second, as was Danish veteran Anders Hansen.

The 47-year-old Hansen retired at the end of the 2015 season and has no plans to return to the tour full time, despite earning his card.

"It is a really cool feeling to get my card back," said the three-time European Tour winner. "It was a very tough week and 108 holes is a lot of golf - especially someone like me who hasn't played a lot of golf recently.

"I am a bit older than all these guys so I am not sure what happens next, but I don't think I'll be restarting my career again. The plan now is to go home and find out what the plan is."

In total 33 players secured their playing privileges, with former European Tour winners Mark Foster, Kristoffer Broberg, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Felipe Aguilar among them.

England's Tom Lewis, who won on his third professional start in 2011, missed out after a closing 70.

Round five report

Experience told on the fifth day of Qualifying School Final Stage as European Tour winners Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Anders Hansen moved within touching distance of regaining their Race to Dubai status for next season.

Just 18 holes remain at Lumine Golf Club, with the top 25 and ties after Thursday's final round earning European Tour cards at the end of a gruelling six-round marathon in Tarragona.

Impressively leading the way is Sam Horsfield, the Englishman who has already come through First and Second Stage. By close of play, he will have played a mammoth 252 holes and ended the day three shots clear on 19 under par after a fifth successive sub-70 round.

His nearest rival is Jeff Winther, who earned his card through Final Stage 12 months ago. The Dane’s seven under par 64 was the joint lowest round of the day and took him to 16 under par.

Four players trail Winther by one shot in a share of third place, including Connor Syme. The Scot shone again on Day Five with a four under par 67 and could crown an impressive start to his professional career by securing European Tour status tomorrow.

Matthew Baldwin, Kristoffer Broberg and Charlie Ford are alongside him while Hansen, three times a winner on the European Tour, is one shot further back in a share of seventh place following an excellent round of 65.

Fernandez-Castano - who has Alvaro Quiros caddying for him this week - matched that score and sits in a tie for 10th on 13 under par, with exactly 25 players currently at 11 under par or better in Spain, but with much drama sure to come in the final round.

Round four report

Simon Khan made the 72-hole cut at Qualifying School Final Stage to keep his dream of a European Tour return alive, with fledgling professionals Adri Arnaus and Robert MacIntyre also producing notable performances after four rounds of the golfing marathon.

England’s Khan, a two-time European Tour winner, made the cut on the two under par mark after a three under par round of 68, with 74 players now set to contest the final 36 holes on the Lakes Course at Lumine Golf Club before the top 25 and ties secure Race to Dubai status for 2018.

Ahead of him, compatriot Sam Horsfield leads the way on 15 under par, one shot ahead of fellow Englishman Charlie Ford whose seven under par 64 was the round of the day in Tarragona.

Meanwhile, Spain’s Arnaus - who only turned professional this week - continued his excellent 2017 form, which already saw him win the Alps Tour’s Order of Merit.

The 23 year old reached five under par to comfortably make the cut, one of four Spaniards to do so on home soil, including Gonzalez Fernandez-Castano - who has fellow seven-time European Tour winner Alvaro Quiros caddying for him this week.

Scotland’s MacIntyre was delighted to have secured himself a full Challenge Tour category for next season by making the cut just two months after he represented Great Britain & Ireland at the Walker Cup.

Another man happy to have secured Challenge Tour status was Jonathan Thomson, who will become the tallest player on the European Tour if he gets a card this week - standing at 6-9, the Englishman is now in a share of third place on 12 under par.
