Sheff Wed 0-1 Wolves: Sky Bet Championship leaders open seven-point gap at top

Wolves extended their lead at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table with a first-half goal from Ruben Neves giving them a 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

The home side, who are now just 1/5 with the sponsors to win the title and 1/25 to be promoted, had to play the last five minutes with 10 men after Morgan Fox received a red card.

The result sees Wolves go seven points clear of their nearest challengers, Cardiff.

Meanwhile, the pressure is mounting on Wednesday's head coach, Carlos Carvalhal, who has not seen his side win in their last six outings.

The visitors' winner came in the 34th minute when a free-kick from Ivan Cavaleiro was headed out only as far as Neves, who drilled a low, 20-yard shot inside Joe Wildsmith's left-hand post.

The hosts struggled to create meaningful chances after the break - despite a battling display they managed just one shot on target all night - and had Fox sent-off five minutes from time when he picked up his second yellow card following a foul on Helder Costa.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo said: "When you don't control the game you have to stick together and defend well.

"A clean sheet is a good prize for the team. We struggled for moments when they were on top of us.

"It was a good kick from Ruben (for the goal), but there were moments when we should have done better in the last third."

Opposite number Carvalhal could not criticise his men and said he had "no problem" with the owners despite the club's poor form.

"I am very happy about the players tonight and we'll be better in the future," he said. "We must play like today but we must be more of a threat.

"They put the ball inside the net and with the situations we had, we didn't achieve the goal.

"To create goal situations is not easy against them. It is very difficult to achieve situations."

Carvalhal added: "I am doing my work the best that I know. Don't ask me about confidence because I have a good relationship with the chairman and I don't have any kind of problem.

"We have almost a team out (injured) at the moment. There were nine players out tonight."

Wednesday are out to 28/1 for promotion. They are now 15th in the table - 10 points outside the play-off spots, a position which could worsen when rivals play their games in hand on Saturday.

Carvalhal's men are also 150/1 to be relegated - they are 11 points clear of the drop zone.
