Jan Siewert sacked: A look at the contenders to become the new head coach of Huddersfield

Huddersfield are on the hunt for a new head coach after Jan Siewert was sacked on Friday night.

The 36-year-old managed just one win in seven months in West Yorkshire - that being their success over Wolves back in February.

That single victory in 19 games means that he left the John Smith's Stadium with a measly 5.3% win ratio.

Defeat to Fulham on Friday was his final act - Town picking up just one point from their opening three games of the new Sky Bet Championship campaign.

It forced the new senior management in place at the club to move with his sacking announced shortly after the full-time whistle.

The situation means that Town are on the hunt for a new head coach once again, one who they hope will push the club back up the standings.

Here, using odds from Sky Bet, we take a look at some of the contenders to become the next Terriers boss.

Mark Hudson

Sky Bet odds: 6/4

Mark Hudson has previously taken caretaker charge of Huddersfield

He made over 100 appearances for the Terriers across a three-year spell and was a part of the squad that secured promotion to the Premier League.

Mark Hudson is still involved in the club and has held the position of under-23s manager since his retirement in 2017.

Hudson took caretaker charge when David Wagner was sacked back in January. He was unable to guide them to three points as they were easily beaten by Manchester City at home.

Town's defence has been one of many concerns this season, with the Terriers backline directly at fault for two of the four goals they have conceded in the league.

Given his inexperience in senior management, the appointment of Hudson would require patience and time to make things right - something that Huddersfield may not be prepared to give in their current situation.

Chris Hughton

Sky Bet odds: 7/4

Chris Hughton: Relief for the Brighton boss
Chris Hughton left Brighton in the summer

Chris Hughton reportedly turned down the opportunity to manage Sheffield Wednesday, which means Huddersfield will really have to sell him a vision and a plan.

Hughton left Brighton in the summer after guiding the Seagulls to Premier League promotion and subsequent safety.

In similar fashion to Hudson, Hughton's first priority would have to be sorting out the current defence and stop the leaks that are giving soft goals away.

Town need short-term impact and you question how much of that Hughton will provide. He will also be one that will require time to build, but the appointment is likely to be one welcomed by the majority of the Terriers faithful.

Sol Campbell

Sky Bet odds: 6/1

Sol Campbell: Leaves Macclesfield after eight months in charge
Sol Campbell left Macclesfield last week

Sol Campbell is back on the managerial market following his departure by mutual consent from Macclesfield last week.

The former Arsenal and England defender managed to keep Town in the Football League, despite taking over when relegation seemed an almost certainty, and went onto post a 26.7% win ratio.

His efforts with Macclesfield have not gone unnoticed, with Tony Cascarino recently telling TalkSport: "To keep them up was pretty much a minor miracle. I’ve lauded Phil Parkinson at Bolton when he got promoted when he was under a [transfer] embargo.

"He went down and he’s still their manager. He’s in a similar situation [to Campbell], imagine coming in here and none of us have been paid and we’re having to do a show.

"Sol had only lost two of his last 10 games. So when I heard the news midweek, and it was apparently by both parties mutual consent, I was stunned with the circumstances that Sol had thrown himself into."

If Huddersfield are looking for an instant impact, they may point towards Campbell's efforts in his short stint with Macclesfield.

Gary Rowett

Sky Bet odds: 9/1

Gary Rowett: The 44-year-old joined Stoke from Derby in May 2018
Gary Rowett is currently out of work

Gary Rowett is a name known to most fans of clubs in the Sky Bet Championship having had spells at Birmingham, Derby and Stoke.

He guided Derby to the play-offs in 2018, although left for Stoke when they were defeated at the semi-final stage.

Rowett has a good reputation within football but he needs to have something to show for his efforts.

His spell at the Potters was far from great. They started the season as favourites for the title yet Rowett was sacked in early January following a poor run of results.

In all honesty, he doesn't appear like the right fit for Huddersfield. He'd want time to build up a squad which he would feel is competitive enough. Again, it comes down to the question of short-term impact.

Nigel Adkins

Sky Bet odds: 10/1

Nigel Adkins' departure from Hull was a surprise in the off-season, a clash of ambitions is said to be the cause.

This appointment would bring about results in the short-term while also having someone patient enough to build for the future.

The Tigers enjoyed a positive season in his first full campaign in charge. Having avoided relegation in 2017/18, Adkins guided them to 13th place, with 17 wins from 46 games.

Adkins would be a sensible appointment by the Terriers. Someone who knows the division and can guide them to a safe mid-table finish this season, which in all honesty should be the aim currently.

Let's be honest, he couldn't have done much worse than Siewert.
