It looked like the former Derby boss would make a winning start in his second era with the Blues, where he scored a record 211 goals and won 13 major trophies as a midfielder, when striker Michy Batshuayi gave the visitors an eighth-minute lead in Dublin.

But in the final minute of the game, Molloy struck a leveller for the hosts before celebrating in style.

Lampard opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation in his first game and oped for two different XIs for each half in Dublin.

Starting line-up: Willy Caballero, Dujon Sterling, Cesar Azpilicueta, Marc Guehi, Kenedy, Danny Drinkwater, Ethan Ampadu, Pedro, Conor Gallagher, Kasey Palmer, Michy Batshuayi.

Second half line-up: Jamie Cumming, Davide Zappacosta, Trevoh Chalobah, Kurt Zouma, Ian Maatsen, Lewis Baker, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Izzy Brown, Billy Gilmour, Lucas Piazon, Ike Ugbo.

After the break, the likes of Kurt Zouma, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Lewis Baker and Izzy Brown were introduced but they couldn't hold onto the advantage.

Frank Lampard reaction

"Fitness was our issue, we've been working hard on it, even this morning. Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that's halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit.

"The quicker we get there the better. It's about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.

"I've enjoyed it, we've got great support over here. It was a tough game for us, we've only been here for a few days. But I'm pleased with how we got on.

"I've been pleased with the players' attitude since I arrived last week."
