Charlton’s opening pre-season game did not go as expected as it was abandoned on 49 minutes, after the referee was 'manhandled' by players of Romanian side Gaz Metan Mediaș.
Lee Bowyer’s side held a 1-0 lead thanks to George Lapslie’s goal, in what was meant to be a 70-minute game in Spain.
However after the break Charlton looked set to double their lead as they were awarded a penalty, but the spot-kicked sparked some ‘distasteful scenes’, according to Charlton’s official match report.
In the ensuring protests Valentin Cretu and Marius Constantin were both said to have laid their hands on referee Raul Mateo, who reacted by sending the pair off.
Head coach Edward Iordanescu's reaction was to withdraw his team from the pitch, which caused the game to be abandoned.
Despite the bizarre ending Charlton appeared to still see the funny side, as Lyle Taylor still took and scored the penalty against his own goalkeeper.
The Addicks go to Welling United a week on Saturday in their next pre-season match, before beginning their return to the Sky Bet Championship at Blackburn Rovers on August 3.
