On-loan West Brom defender Jack Fitzwater reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time as he volleyed the ball into the roof of the net to give the Saddlers hope but Rovers held on for their third straight win.

Hot on their heels, second-placed Shrewsbury recorded a 2-0 win away to Charlton who, as a result, dropped out of the play-off positions.

Alex Rodman's long-range strike broke the deadlock seven minutes after the break and Omar Beckles doubled the Shrews' lead with his 67th-minute header.

Wigan remain third after a narrow 1-0 triumph at home to struggling Rochdale after Latics captain Michael Jacobs fired Jamie Walker's flick on into the bottom corner 12 minutes in. The defeat saw Dale drop back to the bottom.

Antoni Sarcevic's deflected shot 10 minutes before the break proved enough as Plymouth claimed a 1-0 victory over Bradford, who lost Charlie Wyke to a straight red card for a raised arm in an aerial challenge with Sonny Bradley.

The result saw the Pilgrims move into the last play-off spot following an impressive run of six straight wins and just one defeat from their last 15 matches.

Rotherham claimed a late 2-1 comeback victory at home to Doncaster as Joe Newell's penalty - 13 minutes into stoppage-time - stole all three points.

John Marquis rifled home Alex Kiwomya's lay back to give Doncaster a narrow half-time lead and Michael Smith's last-minute header levelled matters before Newell fired home his spot-kick.

Scunthorpe remain in the play-off mix after being pegged back to a late 1-1 draw at Bristol Rovers as Duane Holmes' opener just after the hour mark was cancelled out by an Ellis Harrison effort at the death.

Goals from Kyle Vassell (41) and Clark Robertson (63) saw Blackpool claim a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth, while the spoils were shared following a 1-1 draw between Peterborough and Wimbledon as Marcus Maddison's 79th-minute equalised cancelled out Lyle Taylor's (75) opener for the Dons.

Fleetwood

The clash between Fleetwood and MK Dons also ended 1-1 at Highbury Stadium to leave the visitors five points from safety.

Chuks Aneke picked out Robbie Muirhead (20) on the edge of the box and the Scot made no mistake as he slotted into the bottom corner to put the visitors ahead, but Fleetwood equalised nine minutes after the break through Ashley Hunter's long-range effort as they sit just one point above the relegation zone.

Bury switched places with local rivals Rochdale as they sit second-bottom thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Gillingham.

Neil Danns handed the hosts a 12th-minute lead as he won the ball under pressure and picked out the bottom corner, while Harry Bunn doubled their advantage midway through the first half and Connor Ogilvie pulled one back for the Gills after 69 minutes.

Elsewhere, Northampton's match with Oxford ended goalless, while relegation-threatened Oldham's home clash with Southend was postponed due to a frozen pitch at Boundary Park.
