Leeds beaten as Nathan Jones gets first win as Stoke boss
Stoke produced a stirring performance to claim their first win under Nathan Jones as Leeds ended a difficult week with a third defeat in four Sky Bet Championship games.
In the build-up to kick-off at the bet365 Stadium, the English Football League revealed 11 clubs had officially complained about Leeds spying on opposition teams.
And United have issues on the field too after centre-back Pontus Jansson was sent off on a day when nothing went right for Marcelo Bielsa's team until Ezgjan Alioski made it 2-1 with the last kick of the game.
Sam Clucas brought an uneventful match to life just after the restart by rifling home the opener and Joe Allen finished off 10-man Leeds.
Leeds remain top of the table but their lead is only one point and they will now await the EFL's verdict on Bielsa's pre-game habit.
Losing debut for Martin O'Neil as Nottingham Forest lose to in-form Bristol City
Martin O'Neill's Nottingham Forest return got off to a flat start as Bristol City edged a 1-0 win at a sold-out City Ground.
Lee Johnson's Bristol City kept their impressive momentum going thanks to Famara Diedhiou's precise finish which notched up a fifth consecutive win and extended their unbeaten run to 11 games.
It was not the story the home fans had wanted to see unfold, as the legendary former midfielder returned to the ground where he was part of the famed side, managed by Brian Clough, that lifted back-to-back European Cups.
O'Neill had only four days to prepare for the game, following his appointment at the start of the week, as the replacement for Aitor Karanka.
And it was the visitors who often looked the slicker of the two outfits. Bristol arrived with the clear intent of ruining O'Neill's return, as they had the better of the opening half hour, when it came to clear sights of goal.
Bristol took the lead in the 70th minute when Weimann ghosted into space on the right and cut the ball back accurately for Diedhiou, who delivered a precise low shot into the back of the net, through a group of Forest players.
Jack Colback and Lewis Grabban both tried their luck from range for Forest - but were both denied by the impressive Fielding.
Blades slip up at Swansea
Oli McBurnie scored his 11th goal of the season as Swansea downed high-flying Sheffield United 1-0 to make it five games unbeaten.
McBurnie came up with the game's only goal in the 65th minute as the Blades missed the opportunity to make up ground on Leeds at the top of the Championship.
Chris Wilder's men dominated the first half, but couldn't convert their chances and McBurnie showed them how it should be done.
Leeds' surprise defeat at Stoke opened things up for the teams behind them, but United couldn't take advantage as strikers Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick had an off-night in front of goal.
Hull blow two-goal lead
Aston Villa came from two goals down to end Hull's sparkling winning run in a 2-2 draw at Villa Park.
The visitors, who had claimed six Sky Bet Championship victories on the spin, surged into a commanding lead through Jarrod Bowen - his eighth goal in six league games - and Evandro's dynamic volley.
But Villa reduced the deficit just before half-time when James Chester headed in from close range against his former employers.
The hosts were nonetheless strangely passive in the first half but improved significantly after the break.
And they scored the equaliser manager Dean Smith might feel had been warranted through Tammy Abraham after 67 minutes.
Villa are, however, now without a home win in six league games - a fact which no doubt contributed towards an apprehensive atmosphere inside the ground.
QPR's play-off push dealt a blow
Jayden Stockley and Jordan Storey both opened their accounts for Preston in a thumping 4-1 win over QPR at Loftus Road.
The visitors arrived in west London having failed to win in the last five games, but superb finishes by former Exeter team-mates Stockley and Storey put the visitors well on the way to ending their struggles.
A close-range header by Alan Browne added a third before Matt Smith's effort raised the faintest of hopes of a comeback.
Those were dashed, however, when Brad Potts netted late on as QPR suffered a setback in their promotion push.
Hugill rescues Boro point
Jordan Hugill snatched Middlesbrough a point as his 90th-minute penalty secured a 1-1 draw against Millwall.
Boro were trailing for more than an hour after Jed Wallace rounded off a slick counter-attacking move with a precise first-half finish.
But despite toiling for most of the game, the Teessiders were handed a last-gasp lifeline when Millwall substitute Steve Morison bundled over Daniel Ayala in the box. Hugill converted from the spot to secure his side an equaliser.
Duane Holmes helps Derby to first league win of 2019
Duane Holmes scored his first goal for Derby as County survived a second-half fightback to beat Reading 2-1.
The summer signing from Scunthorpe pounced in the opening minutes to put Derby ahead and Harry Wilson's 12th goal of the season underlined their first-half superiority.
But the introduction of Sone Aluko transformed Reading and his goal set up a tense finish but, despite getting in some dangerous positions, the visitors could not fashion another clear chance.
Three wins in a row for Blackburn
Joe Nuttall scored with his first touch as Blackburn cruised to a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town.
Rovers looked set to be frustrated through a mixture of wasteful finishing and bad luck, as they dominated the Championship's basement boys.
But they got the breakthrough in the second half when Danny Graham converted a 65th-minute penalty to give Rovers the lead their performance merited.
They made it comfortable 15 minutes from time when Nuttall put the finishing touches to a well-worked team move - his first touch after coming on for his fellow goalscorer.
The result gave Blackburn their second straight league Ewood win, and it meant victory in three consecutive Championship games for the first time since March 2015.
It was a miserable return to Ewood for former boss Paul Lambert, whose Ipswich side remain seven points from safety after a fifth away game in which they've lost, failed to score and conceded at least twice.
Brentford break away duck
Brentford's resurgence in the Championship continued as they registered their first away win of the season thanks to a 4-2 success at Rotherham.
The Bees had endured a torrid time on the road but put that right in South Yorkshire thanks to a brace from Kamohelo Mokotjo and efforts from Said Benrahma and Neal Maupay.
The Millers had twice battled back to level up, first with a ferocious effort from Jon Taylor and then an Ezri Konsa own goal, but they slipped to a third home loss of the season which keeps them firmly in relegation danger.
And Brentford's win not only extends their unbeaten run to seven games but also means that their hosts are now the only team in the division not to record an away win this season.
Fletcher fires for Wednesday
A brilliantly taken goal from Steven Fletcher secured Sheffield Wednesday an important 1-0 victory over struggling Wigan at Hillsborough.
The striker drilled home from 25 yards to give the Owls their first win in four Championship matches, leaving Athletic hovering just six points above the relegation zone.
