A first-half brace from Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke's header sent Sheffield United back to the top of the Sky Bet Championship with a 3-1 win at Burton.

Chris Wilder's side proved too hot to handle on a chilly night in East Staffordshire where even a stunning 25-yard effort from Matty Palmer to level things up for Albion could not prevent the Blades enhancing their promotion credentials.

Sheffield United are second in Sky Bet title odds at 7/1 behind odds-on favourites Wolves (4/7).

The Blades are on offer at 6/4 in the promotion prices.

Preston's struggles continued as they were held to a goalless draw at home by Lancashire rivals Bolton.

Both sides could, and perhaps should, have broken the deadlock with North End's Tom Barkhuizen and Wanderers' Josh Vela having the best chances of the match in the first half.

But goalkeepers Ben Alnwick and Chris Maxwell ultimately came out on top as Preston's winless run reached seven Championship games, while improving Bolton are now unbeaten in six.

Bolton are still odds-on to go down at 4/7 and Preston can be backed at 25/1 for relegation.
