Cristiano Ronaldo’s double in a 2-1 victory over Lyon was not enough to stop Juventus suffering a shock last-16 Champions League exit.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward scored in each half to cancel out Memphis Depay’s 12th-minute penalty for the visitors in Turin, but Juventus were eliminated on away goals.
Ronaldo’s strikes took him up to 37 for the season, which is the most goals scored in a single season by a Juve player, but it was Lyon who booked a quarter-final meeting with Manchester City after a key 1-0 victory in the first leg.
The match was not short on controversy, as first Lyon were awarded a penalty when Houssem Aouar appeared to be cleanly tackled in the area only for the referee to point to the spot.
Depay chipped home a Panenka after the VAR failed to overturn the decision, leaving Juve requiring three goals without reply.
And the first came when Depay was penalised for a handball in the box, with his arms tucked in as part of a wall at a free-kick.
Ronaldo fired in the resultant spot-kick, before lashing home from outside the area after half-time to give his side hope.
But they could not find the third goal that they needed, meaning it is Lyon who will face Man City in Lisbon on August 15.
