Sunday August 20

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham)

On Sunday's defeat: "They were clinical in front of goal. Two shots on target, two goals.

"I'm happy with the performance. I think we played really well and deserved more, but sometimes in football it's difficult to accept but they were clinical.

"I'm disappointed because we wanted to win the game but it was impossible. But the team playing the way we play we dominated the game and created the better chances but we were a little unlucky.

"They fought a lot, tried to defend deeper and play on the counter-attack. But okay, I am disappointed but I'm not upset, I'm not frustrated, it's only the beginning of the season and we just need to work hard to improve and I think we'll win a lot of games."

Antonio Conte (Chelsea)

On the performances of his players: "Their commitment, their desire, the heart they put on the pitch today was incredible.

"Tottenham are a really strong team and they showed to be a great team and I must be pleased for the commitment, the desire, the will to fight for every ball. They showed me the desire of last season is still in their hearts.

"Now it's important to rest up, to continue to work and to try to recover and get the best form from, for example, (Tiemoue) Bakayoko and (Alvaro) Morata. They played a really good game but I think they can improve a lot for our team."

Striker Morata missed a great chance to open the scoring with an early header, and Conte added: "He could have scored but he's a work-rate was incredible.

"For sure he can improve a lot but I think he showed great physicality and good technique in a very difficult game."

Huddersfield 1-0 Newcastle

David Wagner (Huddersfield)

On Huddersfield's start to the season: "I don't have to pinch myself but I didn't expect it.

"But it's football, if someone knows that in football everything is possible then it's me and our club after what we've seen and felt last season.

"We only wanted to be brave in every single game, to search for our chance, and I think we've done it so far. Of course we are over the moon with six points in the two opening games, two clean sheets and I think these points were deserved, it's what makes it even bigger."

On Aaron Mooy: "He doesn't really say much, doesn't smile a lot, he's very calm but he is for sure very happy and very proud as well, and I think he deserves all the credit for his goal.

"He's a great technical footballer with such unbelievable working attitude. This is why I love this player.

"He was one of our priorities. We were in a lot of talks during the play-offs. We asked, 'What happens if we get promoted?' And he always gave us a sign that he was open to stay. He likes this football club, dressing room and his role in our team."

Rafael Benitez (Newcastle)

On Sunday's defeat: "My experience in the Premier League is that you have to take your chances because if you make mistakes you will pay for that.

"It's maybe because it's a learning process so we have to learn quickly, maybe it's too soon for us."

Asked if that process would take longer than people expect, he replied: "Yes, for sure."

On speculation linking Newcastle with Andy Carroll: "There's no news, I haven't read the newspapers, we have to wait.

"Obviously we are working behind the scenes trying to do things but I don't know which is our position at the moment."

Saturday August 19

Swansea 0-4 Manchester United

Jose Mourinho (Manchester United)

On whether he was worried that Paul Pogba would be sent off: "No, because I didn't think the first yellow card was deserved.

"The first yellow card is a little bit out of context because I saw Jonathan (Moss) had a criteria where certain action wouldn't bring yellow cards.

"There were actions, especially one on (Nemanja) Matic, that is a yellow card and he decided to speak with the players.

"I thought with Paul he would do the same, so when the yellow card came I was a bit surprised. I didn't fear the second yellow card."

On his team's impressive start to the season: "The word that describes the team now is confident.

"I don't want to see it but, if it happens, I want to see the team losing and see the way we emotionally react to it.

"It will be another stage, losing and trying to change the result, because at the moment everything is going in our favour.

"It's not always motorway - you find difficult roads and roadworks.

"I prefer to say we started last season with two matches, six points, and we finished sixth.

"Two matches are not the end of the world for people who lose, and it's not paradise for people who win."

Paul Clement (Swansea)

On the need for player recruitment: "We absolutely need more quality players to come in, so we have a chance of being competitive this year.

"The sooner we can do it the better. It could go later in the window but the necessity is there. It's clear."

On his side's display: "We were competitive for long periods of the game. Up until the second goal the difference was a set-play and generally the shape was good.

"I made some offensive changes because I don't want to be a coach happy to lose 1-0 at home, but we ended up playing to their strengths and they punished us."

Bournemouth 0-2 Watford

Eddie Howe (Bournemouth)

On a second successive weekend without a goal: "(It was) below our normal standards. The whole game really, I thought we were off where we need to be. I felt it was good chance for us today to win, if we played well. But we didn't and we turned the ball over far too easily. I think that was probably our Achilles' heel. Usually we're very good with the ball but today we were short.

"We know we're better than that, it's not a true representation of our ability, so lots of work to do. I thought our tempo was slow. We wanted a quick game, we felt that was the best way for us to play, we're better when we're quicker but it was too slow again, too methodical and we made it easy for Watford to defend.

"My position now is not to panic and make sure that you don't overreact but certainly we need to change."

Marco Silva (Watford)

On new signing Richarlison: "I don't like too much to talk about individual players but, of course, I'm happy. I know very well the player, we analysed the player for the last month and a half before we signed him.

"He's a talent, it's easy for you to understand that, but he's not only a talent. He's a player who comes every day to work hard, to learn as well. He's a young boy, 20 years old, his first moments in Europe and he can't say one word in English.

"It's the moment to be calm with him, to give time to him as well. It's not a surprise to me what he did today."

On claiming all three points: "I saw a very, very good game, both teams tried to win the game. I think everybody in the stadium liked the match.

"Our second half is really very good. They (Bournemouth) play good football normally when they play at home and with this idea of football they put problems for the opposition normally. We controlled very well, put a lot of pressure on them and didn't permit them an easy build-up.

"And after, we were quality with the ball, we have personality as well and I think we deserved this victory."

Burnley 0-1 West Brom

Sean Dyche (Burnley)

On Hal Robson-Kanu's red card: "It's a definite red that has to be given. It's a late elbow, I don't think it's malicious, it's the flow of the body more than anything, but it's still an elbow to the face."

On being upbeat despite losing the game: "I thought it was a good performance. You end up scratching your head that you don't get something, particularly when you perform so well, other than a smack up pitch that we didn't deal with really.

"I thought we limited them to very few chances and made a number ourselves. I'm disappointed with the outcome but definitely not the performance."

Tony Pulis (West Brom)

On Jonny Evans being left out: "Jonny's not the type of lad, even if Man City were involved, not to play a game of football if he was fit. He's a smashing lad, I've got a lot of time for him and he's been fantastic for us. This injury came about before Manchester City have made an enquiry."

On Robson-Kanu's dismissal: "Obviously he took his goal really well, it was a good goal, and then he's sent off so it's obviously disappointing. I've not seen it but I will have a good look at it afterwards and then I'll comment on it. Whether it was or wasn't, the referee has made the decision so we had to get on with it.

"It was difficult (after he was sent off). He was sent off with seven minutes to go and it seemed like an hour. We had to defend for our lives. What Burnley do, they do very, very well and they deserve a lot of credit for it.

"We have had to ride our luck, but the lads have fought and fought all game."

Leicester 2-0 Brighton

Craig Shakespeare (Leicester)

On Riyad Mahrez's performance: "He made the statement [about wanting to leave] and everyone knows the speculation about the bid we had and it wasn't accepted.

"I've spoken to him individually and said: 'While you're here you need to be professional and respectful of your team-mates and Leicester City Football Club'.

"Credit to him, he's done that. While he remains as focused as his performance here, we all know his ability on the field.

"And while he's in that frame of mind, he'll always be considered for selection.

"He's the type of player who enjoys his football, if he's not training he doesn't enjoy the recovery session. He always says 'I don't want to rest, I want to train', he wants to play all the time, he's like a kid on the playground.

"Thankfully he set us off here."

Chris Hughton (Brighton)

On back-to-back Premier League defeats: "We certainly weren't at the level we need to be on the ball but we stuck in there and at 1-0 you have always got a chance. Then it's difficult again when you concede from a set play, where we have got to be better.

"They were two soft goals and we are up against a team that have had great league experience in the last three years and what they achieved the season before.

"They never opened us up as much as they could have. Maty (Ryan) never had to make the type of saves that keep us more in the game, so I felt there was an opportunity for us to play better."

Liverpool 1-0 Crystal Palace

Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)

On supposedly being under pressure to keep a clean sheet: "Obviously my decision not to read the English press is one of the best I did in my life. Were we already under pressure? All the criticism around. Defending was outstandingly good today.

"The football played in the first half could have been better but I was really happy we scored and created chances in the second half. Offensive football is always making the right decision at the right moment. We didn't see the spaces often enough in the first half. It's one pass, one switch (for the goal) and the world is much nicer at this moment. We didn't do this often enough."

Frank de Boer (Crystal Palace)

On wanting to make more signings: "Still we are looking, of course. If we think this is a really quality injection for the squad we don't hesitate, but it has to be the right one. No panic buying or anything like that. Really it's a quality injection for the squad, of course we are looking for that.

"I think they (Liverpool) were at times frustrated that they could not play around us, between us, and that is a very good compliment for the team. But you have to reward yourself for that and at the end it's all about the points and we still have empty hands right now. I have full confidence we will get our points very soon."

Southampton 3-2 West Ham

Mauricio Pellegrino (Southampton)

On his relief to take all three points: "Maybe they are stronger than us and they were playing this type of game with free-kicks, long free-kicks, deep free-kicks. The majority of the problems for us were in this type of moment. After the second goal we were a little bit relaxed but not in terms of concentration, in terms of trying to be more clinical to score the third one and try to kill the game.

"When you give the opponent some opportunities like today you will be in trouble and this is something we have to improve.

"I haven't seen the replay (of the key decisions) and sometimes when the referee (Lee Mason) makes a decision you have to respect them. When they are for you you are happy; when it's against you have to suffer and to keep going."

Slaven Bilic (West Ham)

Mixed feelings after a narrow defeat: "We lost a point but gained a lot of things after the Manchester United game. Great team spirit; character; we didn't give up, and showed quality to play with 10 men for such a long period of time. It's extremely hard, especially when you're one down. We spoke at half-time and they responded in the best possible way to what we asked of them. I'm gutted, but we gained a lot of things from the performance.

"Yes, of course (Arnautovic apologised in the dressing room). It's hard to play for 10 men for such a long period of time. We knew what we were getting with Hernandez: a really great player, great character, team player, really enthusiastic. You're expecting goals from him, but it wasn't only the goals.

"At half-time I asked him to be on the left wing, to track back with (Cedric) Soares, and he did that brilliantly. On top of the goals, his determination; he sacrificed for the team in the best possible way."

Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

Mark Hughes (Stoke)

On the performance of debutant Jese: "I think from the first few moments everybody understood why we wanted to bring him here.

"I think everybody is going to enjoy watching him and that he'll light the Premier League up as the season progresses.

"He can play right across the front three or four. That versatility and flexibility is perfect.

"He hadn't trained all week the week before this one, and trained three days this week, so it was a little bit of a risk (to put him straight in the starting line-up).

"I thought he scored a great, finisher's goal - that of a top player in my opinion."

Arsene Wenger (Arsenal)

On feeling his side did not get the rub of the green: "I believe it is the kind of night where you are angry.

"That is because not only did we not score with the number of chances we had, we made stupid mistakes centrally for the goal, first by losing the ball and after by not defending properly.

"And on top of that as well I think we were unlucky with some decisions from the referee because we scored a regular goal."

On whether he felt his side's offside 'goal' should have stood: "One hundred per cent. I just watched it and it is not offside at all. Even his foot was not offside."

On whether the Bellerin-Diouf incident should have resulted in a penalty: "Yes, of course, but we know we don't get penalties.

"Look at the numbers and you will see. We had last year the highest (number of) penalties against us at home by a mile and the lowest number for us. So I give you just the numbers. I don't say anything else."
