Frank Lampard: Special praise for the former England and Chelsea midfielder
Frank Lampard: Special praise for the former England and Chelsea midfielder

Frank Lampard has been praised for his approach in his first job in senior management, with Derby firmly in the hunt for promotion.

The Rams were looking for a new manager last summer when boss Gary Rowett jumped ship for Stoke and eyebrows were raised when they went for the inexperienced Lampard.

The former Chelsea midfielder took the reins at Pride Park with former Blues youth coach Jody Morris as his assistant and they made some impressive additions, including Sky Bet League One top scorer Jack Marriott from Peterborough, Chelsea prospects Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori and Liverpool's Welsh winger Harry Wilson, the latter three all on loan.

Watch the conversation in full, as Gareth Jones, Tom Carnduff, Noel Whelan and Dom Newton-Collinge discuss Lampard as a manager...

County have taken to life well under Lampard, with an attractive and effective brand of football.

As well as beating Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup, they have won 12 and drawn seven of their 26 Sky Bet Championship fixtures to date, leaving them sixth in the table.

They are 10/3 with Sky Bet for promotion, odds-on for a top-six finish, and face a tough trip to leaders Leeds on Friday.

In the same week his predecessor Rowett was sacked by Stoke, the Sporting Life team singled Lampard out for praise in our latest podcast.

After such a glittering playing career, the 40-year-old is now passing on his wisdom to the next generation of players.

Former Leeds, Coventry and Middlesbrough forward Noel Whelan said on the latest Sky Bet Championship podcast: "He is a winner.

"He demands that from his players, isn't coming in for his first opportunity and a fourth-placed finish, he is installing something into these players that they've been lacking when they've spent all this money.

"He is installing a winning mentality, attitude and character to these players, along with the talent they have, they are organised and are a dangerous side.

"He passes that enthusiasm and steeliness from his playing days to his players and you can see that."
