Everton 2-5 Arsenal: Ronald Koeman under more pressure

Beleaguered Everton manager Ronald Koeman was left clinging on to his job after the Toffees slipped into the Premier League's relegation zone with a 5-2 home defeat to Arsenal.

No wins in their last five matches, just two victories in the last 13, eight points from nine games and only six league goals add up to a whole host of problems for the Dutchman.

Even Wayne Rooney's recreation of his famous breakthrough goal as a precocious 16-year-old against the same opposition and in the same Goodison Park net to give Everton an unexpected early lead could not mask the issues the Toffees face.

It was an advantage they never looked like holding as Nacho Monreal equalised just before the break with Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette – after Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was sent off – and Aaron Ramsey netting to pull the Gunners clear.

Substitute Oumar Niasse pulled one back thanks to poor defending but fittingly Alexis Sanchez had the final say with the last kick of the game as Arsenal's eased to a first away win of the season.

Sky Bet make Koeman odds-on at 1/4 to be the next Premier League manager to leave his job. That's ahead of West Ham boss Slaven Bilic at 7/4.

Everton have been shortened from 16/1 to 12/1 in Sky Bet's relegation odds.

Arsenal are on offer at 5/4 for a top-four finish.

Story of the odds

  • Sky Bet offered Arsenal at 100/1 to claim a 5-2 victory before kick-off. The biggest price that punters could back the Gunners for the win in-play was 9/4.
  • There were two 66/1 RequestABet winners with Sky Bet. They were...
  • Sanchez & Lacazette to score and Williams & Gueye to be carded
  • Sanchez & Lacazette to score and Koscielny & Gueye to be carded

Post-match reaction

Ronald Koeman is unsure of his future as Everton manager.

Asked whether the heavy loss could cost Koeman his job, he told Sky Sports: "I don't know.

"I told the players I believe in them, the commitment of the players. But if you are negative thinking - and everybody is doing that in this moment - all these kinds of decisions are not in my hands.

"That is normal because that is football. We have played nine Premier League games, against the first five of the Premier League last season, but this is not the position that is good for Everton.

"I understand that. I have worked a long time in football. First of all, I don't think it is too late (to turn things around)."

It was put to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger it was his side's best performance of the season so far.

"Maybe the most complete defensively and offensively yes but (in other games) we were punished for every mistake," he said.

"Sanchez was on fire and has worked very hard after coming back from injury, Mesut as well.

"The two of them were sharp physically. If you have that individual quality, it makes them dangerous against any defender.

"He (Ozil) was superb, agile, quick, intelligent, always at the service of the team. He is an exceptional player."
