Liverpool transfer news: Defender Ragnar Klavan close to Cagliari move

Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan is close to joining Italian side Cagliari in a £2million deal, as Jurgen Klopp looks to trim his squad for the coming season.

The Estonia international is surplus to requirements at Anfield and the Serie A side have agreed a fee for his transfer.

32-year-old Klavan is due in Italy on Friday to negotiate personal terms and undergo a medical.

Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are struggling with injuries but Joe Gomez has impressed as Virgil van Dijk's partner while youngster Nat Phillips did well in pre-season and encouraged Klopp into thinking he can do without Klavan.

Liverpool manager Klopp offered no new details about Klavan's expected departure ahead of Monday's clash with Crystal Palace.

"I didn't hear that anything is finally sorted," the German said.

"But I said before it's possible players will leave the club and if they do it will be good for all three sides. No player would leave if I did not allow it. If he leaves then I said yes to it, that's how it is."

Further outgoings are anticipated but Klopp continued to play his cards close to his chest.

"We are not in a financial need to do that," he said. "We could give a few players the opportunity but there's no number in my mind."

As for talk of Dominic Solanke joining Steven Gerrard's Rangers on loan, the German added: "I'm hearing about it for the first time now, so it doesn't seem like it's close."

Gomez partnered van Dijk at the centre of the Reds' defence in the win over West Ham last Sunday, and the England international impressed Klopp.

"I was never in doubt about Joe and his ability to play centre-back, he just needed time," Klopp said.
