Ipswich Town 0-1 Norwich City: James Maddison nets winner

James Maddison netted the winner as Norwich beat rivals Ipswich 1-0 in the East Anglian derby at Portman Road.

Maddison's fine effort in the 59th minute ensured bragging rights for the Canaries, who remain unbeaten in derby matches since 2009.

The hosts were left to rue missed chances in the first half, after Jonas Knudsen hit the woodwork in the opening five minutes and David McGoldrick headed over from close range.

But it was an assured performance from the visitors in manager Daniel Farke's first East Anglian derby and the win moved Norwich into the Sky Bet Championship play-off places.

Norwich have been cut from 11/2 to 9/2 by Sky Bet to win promotion to the Premier League.

Ipswich are out at 66/1 to go up.

Post-match reaction

Norwich manager Daniel Farke insisted after the victory that his side are "the team of the moment".

He said: "It was really something special. To do it with a derby win when it was such a close game is always good.

"I'm really happy for the lads and the supporters, who were brilliant. To be able to give them this present this afternoon is really good.

"I don't pay too much attention to the table at the end of October, it's really important that you're in the right position at the beginning of May.

"But it's a good sign so we know we are the team of the moment in the league.

"There will some setbacks, one hundred per cent, but I've got the feeling as long as these guys stand together then we are able to create something extra and that's what we're trying to do.

"For both teams, there was a brilliant atmosphere. The game was full of passion and full of emotion and as a player and a manager, that's what you're searching for."

Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy rued his side's missed chances following the defeat.

He said of Norwich: "I think they're a good side and they're very hard to break down. They've got some good players.

"But for the majority of that game, certainly the first half, we were the better side. We just haven't taken our chances and they have.

"I'm pleased with my team's performance, I've got no qualms about that, I'm just bitterly disappointed with the result.

"It hurts me to lose any game but it's never ever going to hurt me as much as it hurts fans who have supported the club for 30 years.

"But as a professional, and someone who's very proud about what they do and how they do it, I'm extremely disappointed."
